The Rite of Work.

Often it is said: Work Hard!
However if we actually delve deep into the principle of working hard, we don't find something that is crucial the the concept. That is efficiency.
Rather we should be striving for: Working Smart

How to work smart for tomorrow at school, college or university, work, personal life, social life or most disliked, errands:

1- Check your tasks to complete. Get a diary or notepad. Write in a list format, with sub lists if the tasks are linked in category.

2- Look at your list and highlight the order of priority.

3- Assign a timeframe for each task. With an allowance for breaks and with realistic expectations.

4- Execute them, and follow up how you went, with lessons of FAILURE each time. Failing with progress (Check out our post on failing). Did I miss anything? Or what worked for you ?

@thechristianalpha That's great advice! I do most of those already for my daily schedule. Been experimenting with the setting a time on activities. 😁

The Rite of the Romans!
Today's focus is the principle that the ancient Romans had for becoming a man. Here's three stages we can learn from them:

1- Preparation period, a young boy from the age of five would be taken and taught skills in fighting, chivalry, social skills and have strong mentorship.

2-Once a boy would reach a certain age, which historians argue would have been at the age of fifteen or so. There was a rite of passage which marked the beginning of a change in social status, hence Manhood.

3-Virtus was the term dubbed on the now man, and a man would then be considered an equal among his peers and Roman society.

From these stages that they used, I believe for young boys, they must undertake training. This is crucial for parents and prospective parents to really focus on the formation of skills of their future men for society.

What are your thoughts? Please share in the comment section below.

The Rite of Respect.
Respect is one of the greatest things that a man can accomplish. It is not simply, respecting others here and there. It is the consistency of responding to the worst of situations, with meekness, kindness and temperance.

Respect is what will earn you that job, get you those tough favours done, build your networks, help you get a cheaper sales deal, win the heart of that girl, win the respect of your colleagues, help you get that promotion, escape that speeding ticket, close that sales deal or up sell and the list goes on to infinity and beyond!

I have so many moments in my life, that respect has helped me get by and get ahead. Respect has one attribute, NETWORK. It will create so many more networks of people for your life.

So here's the morale of today for you to take and try tomorrow..... and Wednesday and and every other day, with no breaks off:

Respect everyone, and walk that extra mile.

How has respect helped you get ahead in life? What are you experiences?

@riteofmanhood @thechristianalpha so the balance of power is key ? Great point.

The Rite of the Outdoors.
With so many high rise developments around me, I often wonder how will the future generations who will most likely live in them, get outdoors and play, and hurt their knee while skateboarding.

The knee hurting is metaphorical for the trial and error of life. This can be learnt especially by boys, through playing outside with others from your local community (with some adult supervision). In today's world we have become too protective and precious with our boys growing to become men, that we shelter them from any harm outdoors. This has had a detrimental effect on the emotional resilience of this generation, as the growth of technology has catalysed this effect.
High rise living and technology will definitely not go away, but become more relied upon. It is our job to help the next generation of men get those outdoor experiences around the community, as lifestyle changes occur.
So... Get yourself outdoors with your children for #1 hour a day. Don't let technology rule us (ironically, since we are online at the Rite of Manhood). What are your thoughts on how we can match up to our indoors culture?

@realsuperiormen Great question! No matter where you go there are forests, lakes or mountains somewhere nearby. Even if you live in a major metropolitan area like Tokyo or Mexico City there are always parks that are surprisingly beautiful. The key is to make a habit of getting out into that nature. Some locations take more work than others but it’s always worth the effort. And you’re right about the skateboards - my brothers and I are proud to carry our battle scars! ☠️😁😁

@the.mencollective I can always get behind a post that encourages men to get into nature, and for fostering resilience in our youth.

@the.mencollective Good message, George. I live in a big city and its hard for me to reconcile urban life with the way I grew up in the country surrounded by fields and wildlife. I put forth an effort to know my neighbors and have become friends with them. It does better my life.

@thechristianalpha That's a good word broski. I'm a natural extrovert so it's in my nature to meet the people I see on a regular basis. Most of the people happen to be at the gym because that is the place I go most frequently. It also helps to facilitate relationships where we can share the gospel and make disciples.❀️

The Rite of Improvement!
Today the agenda is improving your life from your shortcomings and failures. In today's world, the greatest error we are taught as young boys in both our families and in the school system is the following:
You must be perfect, and there is no room for mistakes. In school homework, in your workplace, in your social life or especially your financial investment life. This was not the case for our forefathers who were taught by failure. And is not the case in the military, where you are pushed to FAIL. Or a more common scenario, workout; where you must workout your body to failure in order to get stronger.

The reality is that failure leads to success. Your collective failures are what will be a stepping stone to your success, given your attitude will be one that is willing to see it this way.

So how do you improve your life from your shortcomings? FAIL AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN ........ until you succeed.

The main lesson for today, is embrace your failure and PERSEVERE till the end.
How have you persevered ? Have you ever thought of giving up? What made you charge on?

What has helped you become who you are?

On this day 90 years ago, a man named Josemaria Escriva decided to start something that would impact many ordinary people. From the beginning of time it was viewed that the only feasible way for men to follow a path of finding holiness was to join the Priesthood or religious life. Josemaria had a vision that ordinary people can also become holy through their daily work, and you can use it to sanctify your life and achieve holiness.
I first met a Catholic priest who would influence me in 2011. He was rooted in the spirituality of Opus Dei, something that would ultimately inspire me as time passed by. Fr John guided me in making the right choices, in learning about my faith and has shaped me towards my path of becoming a man. He was and still is one of my mentors, someone who constantly gives simple but great advice.

Many priests I know thought I would be a good candidate for the priesthood. I've been part of the Catholic community since I was young and I've been serving our liturgies for a long time. But I've also seen examples of good marriages that can ultimately lead to holiness too. The Priesthood may not be my calling (I do have a girlfriend), but holiness is. It is through Opus Dei that I've discovered I can achieve what the great men and saints of past generations have achieved.

This image was taken in Rome, where the founder of Opus Dei rests in peace along with some of his friends who have been part of his journey.

Who or what has influenced you to become a better man? Comment below, I'm keen to know your thoughts!

The Rite of Meaning.
Often we don't look to the sky and say:
What is it all for?
By that I mean the meaning of life and the nature of existence itself. Despite philosophical and religious beliefs, we all must face the question of our own existence within our cosmological existence in the universe.

As men we have explored the ends of the earth, but the one thing which has driven even the smallest of us, is the desire to know.

Here are some tips to find meaning for those big questions after that long tiring day at work, far fetched from the reflectiveness of the simple and vast sky.

1 - Speak to your grandparents and the elderly who are wise and have lived through life.

2 - Explore Astronomy through star gazing and visiting observatories. Nothing can topple your mental juices for life's questions more than seeing how small we are in the face of the milky way.

3 - Ask trusted friends who may or may not be religious. Have a dedicated time(s) for this question of our existence.

4 - Meditate 15 minutes a day on your own life.

Please share your thoughts everyone.

The small things you do everyday to improve lead to your ultimate success. Make the most of everyday, including your weekends!

Some tips to get the most out of your Saturday or Sunday morning to feel motivated by Monday:

1. Wake up around the same time on Saturday / Sunday as you would on a weekday. You'll get more done and you won't be jet lagged come Monday!

The Rite of Exploration.
In a man's life, there are times throughout the year he must retreat away from the noise, cars and pollution, in order be one again with the wilderness.
This exploration through bushwalking, camping and hiking allows for unstructured exploration and a break from the daily routine. Thereby allowing one to increase chemicals in the mind such as testosterone, endorphins and serotonin. Which re-invigorate your mind and body to perform your daily grind better and with more energy.

Here are three tips for your short and long getaway from your daily grind to re-capture your natural habitat as a cave man:

1 - GPS the most local bush walk reserves in your area for small getaways during the week when you need. You will be surprised that in you don't often need to trek far. The longer ones should be left for when you have more time, which can be used for camping.
2 - Do your workout before taking your next hike or camp, as this can act as a rite of passage for your body to switch from work mode to exploration mode.
3 - Take a light back pack. Containing snacks, food, a pocket knife, raincoat, torch, walking stick, gloves, first aid kit, mobile phone and wallet for identification.

The Rite of Journaling!
Something that many men struggle with, especially in this fast paced day in age, is the ability to reflect altogether, and note one's thoughts on paper.
Journaling has been something that many successful and influential men over the ages have taken up. Also it will serve as a CRUCIAL part in your self development as a man, where you list your daily or even weekly resolutions for areas that may be a bummer or need touching up on!

Here are some PRACTICAL tips on how to start this amazing art, that can help you become a better man:

1 - Get yourself some good stationary. Although this may seem pretty standard, nothing can inspire us men to write, than to have a great notebook and a good pen. May I say this to the exclusion of smart devices, since the blue light and the temptations for distractions are much greater. So make that reflective trip to your stationary store such as #officeworks where I get my gear!

2 - Find a reflective time and place to write your thoughts down. Try to keep it in the same place and cycle of time, much like a sleeping routine.

3 - I highly recommend spending time in the morning or evening (beginning and/or end of each day) with a minimum of 15 minutes. Spend 5 minutes or more settling down, and then begin to collect your day's events consecutively as you bullet point your experiences. It will vary for many people. You might want to allocate a theme for each week.

4 - Since your journal will become a great place of though for you. Spend two 5 minute segments during your busy day to reflect on the lessons and thoughts you are having from the most previous journal session.

The Rite of Self Culture and Etiquette has become a very lost and well abandoned part of our western civilisation, in daily life.
Although many generations did have a sense of formality, social structure and norms for daily life. They seemed to have been abandoned for the past half a century. With many people confused more than ever, we have dedicated this post.

Here at the Rite of Manhood, we stress the importance of reviving the dynamics of daily life with less ambiguity. There are many things in our culture that need to have the Etiquette restored for, such as the following:
- How to take a women out on a date? Who pays? Who picks up? Which side of the road must the man walk on ? How to have it planned?
- How to host a party at home? How to greet guests? What foods to prepare for the theme? What entertainment to have? How to have the effective communication skills to socialise and network?
- How to go for a job interview and stand out from the rest? - How to introduce oneself? - How to carry and impressionable handshake? - How to take criticism? What is the appropriate way to use a mobile phone and smartphone #iPhone at the dinner table.
- How to answer your #android phone while in a conversation?

There are many etiquette questions within our society today that need answering. The most important question we have faced here, is why do we need to revive the lost social norms and etiquette of almost a century ago?

The simple answer is this..... humanity is a culture by its very nature. Hence we have rites and customs to govern our everyday life which act as a means of communication without words.
Since most communication is without words. It then relies upon physical gestures to communicate RESPECT! So therefore our society needs to revise and re-establish the common social habits which maintain respect while carrying on with what we need to do in daily life. While it will be a challenge to restore the once almost perfectly standardised colonial standards we once upon a time had. It is not impossible to revive the essential elements of chivalry and extrapolate them to the modern technological age.
Let us know your thoughts!

@riteofmanhood @thesedated absolutely true brother. It's our job to educate in daily life through personal encounter, and lead by example. I have been on dates where people in a restaurant are inspired by me just simply pulling out a chair and taking the wall facing side.

@riteofmanhood @the.mencollective This is something I am slowly reflecting on and formulating my personal take on. Not to mention consulting with many people such as yourself. Etiquette will be tricky when it comes to standardising rules for everyday life in this day in age. For now, you can have a read of the two books above if you can get a hold of them.

One of the physiological aspects which define our manhood is TESTOSTERONE!

I want to remind everyone of the importance of taking time from our busy week to spend time with family and friends. Also vitally to find time in our schedule for recreational activities. This will help us reduce stress and fatigue, and aid to boost our testosterone in our bodies.
The most vital tip I can give you for this Sunday. Is to ........ RELAX.

Spend some time reflecting on what really helps you to relax, jot them down in a journal. Then find activities for them (eg. Sports, meditation, cooking, going on tours and so forth) by setting aside a specific time to be dedicated ONLY for that.
I must get back to resting today, as it is Sunday! See you all next week. Till then, become a man and stay a man!

@smallguysmedia Question is: when does a man become a man? Love your page idea. It is definitely needed.

Today we live in a world more than ever that has given rise to family, personal and societal problems. Unhappiness has become pre-dominant in our culture of the latest and greatest gadgets and stimulant entertainment, toppled by no responsibility or virtue at all. Men have been hit the hardest in this crisis.

Our response here at the #riteofmanhood is to restore the leadership that men formerly had in guiding the path of our society and its order. However first, we as men must help transform ourselves.
Today more than ever, men around the world must rise up out of the ashes of a culture and world which has shunned the role authentic masculinity, and left many men hopeless. There is no greater time than NOW! To revive the lost path to manhood that guided countless generations before us. If you look at the very least back to our grandfathers and forefathers, you will find the testosterone filled men who did the unthinkable. Men who built empires of families, fought wars to protect the fatherland and most importantly lived VIRTUE.
Man = Virtue (Virtus in Latin)

It is time for all men NOW! To rise up in the darkness and be a light of true manliness. Take control and starting Leading, protecting and providing. Where your light of manhood shines in your community, you will be helping countless men by example.

The one tip for finding and growing your light would be to take some time for reflection, then make resolutions for change in your life. No man is perfect, but it is the resoluteness for change and the constant effort that counts. Then shine your LIGHT!

@riteofmanhood @the.mencollective thank you for your feedback! Appreciate it brother.

@the.mencollective @riteofmanhood No problem, man.

Identity is a vital part of becoming and growing as a man. What we might call your fire is of vital importance, as it represents your unique identity (AKA You) that you must come to know very intimately.

I want to encourage all men to look deep into yourselves and if you have not yet found that inner voice that makes you.....YOU, to finally unlock yourself and discover it.

Your inner fire is your personal brand, your style, your personal identity and personality. Often in today's world, we become pre-conditioned to idolising others in the celebrity culture, and are constantly encouraged through peer pressure to FOLLOW others! What a sad reality for us. Especially when you will look back at your life at the end and see that you have left a legacy which may not be yours. That's why we are here to remind you today of this reality.

The only way we can change the world and making our unique mark here and leaving a legacy for others, is by discovering your fire and fuelling it. Here are a few tips which I have gathered from my discussion with many men, that have proven wonders:
- Take 15 mins a day to meditate and be alone, for profound reflection.
- Find someone you respect, and ask for mentorship (always be conscious of not blindly following them, but finding yourself).
- Journaling daily on paper, as this can help concrete your thoughts.
- Look at your FRIENDS and other relationships in your life carefully. Then you can determine how positive the effects are to your fire.

If there is anything I have missed? Please share your thoughts or what may have worked for you.

Many of you might be wondering why an axe, rose and classical hat make our symbol here at the rite of Manhood?

HAT - The hat symbolises the heads of all men, who is the person itself who is striving to live a manly life to his full capacity.

AXE - The importance of the axe, is that men are called to both possess and exercise strength in all aspects of life. Such as physically, emotionally, mentally and a many other areas. It signifies the power used to chop wood, and we couldn't find any better example for a symbol of strength for men than the old fashioned axe.

ROSE - While men are called to be strong and courageous outlined by our axe. The key to mastering Manhood, is to BALANCE! Both strength and tame oneself from all his testosterone filled energy to have a compassionate, nurturing, meek and chivalrous side.
In short....... Manhood is a balance of both STRENGTH and CHIVALRY. We are here at the Rite of Manhood to help men develop these skills and create a rite of passage to accept ones Manhood, and to continue the journey growing on that path.

How are you balancing these two important attributes of Manhood in your day to day life?

@doktor_faun Chivalry, yes. πŸ‘From French "le chevalier" (or German "Kavalier"), which means "knight". And so chivalry contains strength in itself. - - - Great post, dude!

Our motto here at the Rite of Manhood is:

LEAD - A man is not called to dominate others, but to initiate and instigate in all the aspects of his life. A true leader is not a dictator, but someone who must initiate first, so that he can be the FIRST at the service of others.

PROTECT - A man is called to protect others in all aspects of life, not just physically, but mentally, psychologically and emotionally. Sometimes to protect others from OURSELVES who can be selfish at times, as surprising as it sounds. Protecting our families, friends and our country for those who serve in the military are shining examples.

PROVIDE - The first thing that probably comes to everyone's minds, is to provide for the family by working and putting food on the table. However providing covers other areas of life, such as providing support and help to those in times of need around us, and we are able to allow our skills to come to fruition, which in turn provides a service to others around us.

How have you Lead, protected and provided in your daily life?
