8-bit Alan... I’ve had a new drone for over a month now and this was legitimately the first picture taken. Been happy just flying this thing around and taking videos up until now; the sole purpose of getting the Mavic was essentially just for photography too. Northern Ontario has some pretty interesting vistas, but they are often challenging to capture. Sometimes you just need 10 more feet to get that perfect composition of a river, or a fresh perspective entirely, which a drone excels at. This shot was taken at a lil’ tree farm with the drone master himself, @dmangilbert, on a crisp sunny eve..

The crows call... Typically associated with death and dying, not only in part due to their diet and scavenging habits, but they also have a strange ritual - gathering for funerals, mourning those who have past, and collecting information on how they parted. These birds are highly intelligent, and will often manifest opinions about those around them, forming packs to harass and ridicule whomever they dislike, passing impressions onto future generations.

Spent some amazing afternoon’s photographing this old house on St. Joseph’s island.. It’s a shame that the building is no longer there. Will always hold the memory of narrowly avoiding a confrontation with a resident skunk near to my heart.

Nap time... Sunbathing amongst the herd, this young fallow deer nearly fell asleep in the comfort of his brethren. It’s common to find this type of deer in woodland habitats, and the size of the herd is typically governed by the habitat in which they reside. @maryannfogolin Wow

Smug mug... These little arctic foxes are like the size of a fluffy chihuahua - no joke, maybe even smaller. As they were gracefully frolicking around in the fresh snow, enjoying a peaceful evening with their peers, everything seemed at ease; no worries or danger, no concerns about food, all was calm in the neighbourhood. That was until one of them decided to try the classic dirty dog manoeuvre in a display of dominance. Out of seemingly nowhere, all hell broke loose after the initial shock faded... the fluffy receiver was instantaneously triggered as a wave of utter betrayal washed over his tiny whiskers. What undoubtably seemed like vicious and brutal fight of the ages to them, was met only with ‘awes’ as two tiny white fluffs battled it out over the course of several minutes. #parcomega #quebecoriginal #outaouaisfun

Inside, out... Along the icy shores of Lake Superior, Minnesota, there’s a place known as Hollow Rock, aptly named for the small keyhole opening located dead centre on the island. Getting into the entrance is something usually unthought of, well, because it’s an island surrounded in water, Superior doesn’t typically freeze in the wide open regions. Squeezing myself through the centre revealed a whole other world, something akin to what I would assume to be a Sasquatch den. However, lying await inside this ice-glazed rocky formation revealed an altogether different inhabitant, one more concerned with the way the toque made her hair look, or frost melting away mascara; the elusive @ms.chels. As strange as it may be, this being was busy staring at icicles and licking snow - far too preoccupied to take heed of the impending chill brought about by improper attire.

When all your ducks are in a row, and that’s not even your species... wandering around the park in search of a resident owl, we came across a massive gathering of birds, all of them assuming that food would be provided. You can see the strategies utilized in these two photos; sit patiently and give the old puppy dog eyes, or aggressively squawk/peck at a backpack in an attempt to ascertain goods. They were actually quite a bit taller than appearing here, reaching around 4ft when standing straight up. Each coming along with a squad of mallards to back them up. Can you guess what type of bird they are?

Tiny Alan... The views from up here, perched atop the arches, were nothing short of spectacular. As the sun set you could see the entire valley of Arches National Park light up in different shades of orange and red... Where the water runs through the rocks... it’s absolutely crazy seeing the natural colours emitted from sandstone erosion at Antelope Canyon when the light strikes from above. Wandering through the caverns it’s hard not to run into rocks, and other people for that matter, as you stare straight up to the surface in awe. This photo was taken with the camera pointing directly to the sky, combining two shots; one for the foreground detail and the other background. This particular part of the canyon had a lot of smooth rock formations creating wavy layers throughout the frame, great points of reference to lead the eye through the scene.

Evolution has provided the Blue Jay many advantages over similar subspecies residing in North America. From it’s boldly aggressive nature, to the noisy screams emitted warding off potential predators within its territory, such as the hawk and owl. These traits, along with the beautiful colour and patterns painted on the bird, have defined the Blue Jay as a significant metaphysical creature, in historical folklore and current cultural significance. However, thousands of years of evolutionary selection has bestowed the Blue Jay with undoubtedly the most significant feature of all - the common neck beard. This chin-strap not only increases the Blue Jays ability to reproduce at an alarming level, it gives the bird the confidence and swave needed to raid competing species nests, stealing eggs, laying the beat down on chicks and genuinely acting badass, all the while looking better than 99% of anything around it...

Out on Lake Superior in -40 weather... walking around on the shoreline of Rossport, Ontario @dmgilbert was complaining that his feet were too cold, his boots weren’t cutting it. Myself on the other hand had ridiculously warm feet, but everything else on my body was frozen; couldn’t feel my face or fingers, and was slurring words. Having used the Apex boots from Baffin for over a year across Canada, in some of the most extreme environments, I honestly have to say they are the best boots I’ve ever used in winter conditions bar none. #BaffinWithUs #Baffin #Ad

Stepping over snowmobile tracks, next to fresh wolf tracks and watching otters run by on the weekend was quite the experience. One of the things I can tell you about wildlife portraits, is that they’re similar to any other portraits - it’s all about the eyes... so, a great way to draw a viewer into the frame is to try and be eye-level to the subject, thus creating the effect of being face-to-face with an animal. Even if it requires you to lay on your belly in front of a particularly agitated snake. Luckily, this little guy was only imitating a more poisonous brethren, the rattle snake, in an attempt to ward of any altercations with pure smoke and mirrors tactics. It was odd seeing a snake in the middle of winter while heading out to white pocket, but since he was on the road, and not moving very fast due to the colder temperatures, he was offered a helping commune to safer ground.
