Evident in that smile, flying really suits Lia. Really pulling off the look with those glasses, too! Almost as impressive as pulling off that landing ;-) What’s not to love on such a gorgeous day on top of Catalina?

[cont from 2/12 post] The spirit in this society is the society itself. And it truly lives all around us and within us. It enters you when you arrive and even tries to stay with you when you depart. It was created by and is maintained by the people that live within its realm, and it continues to stir itself into those who destiny decides should fall into it through birth or other means such as vacationing. There is no escaping it.
Seeing its effect — the incredible efficiency inherent in caring for ALL (things and people) — is thrilling. The world works as it should. People do as they should. But people do as they should. These must be amongst the most mixed feelings I’ve felt. The ominous nature of everyone behaving: the behavior is amenable, but the level of unison of it all is in its essence disturbing and at least mildly distressing. By its definition and proven by witness in its practice, this unison lacks the joy of individuality that disobedience brings. And so this is the discovery.
There is no good, single way for us all to be. Total conformity to any ideal — even the most ideal, whatever that may even mean to each person — will always lead to the transformation and elevation of the concept of society into an omniscient, spirit-like, and weighty presence. As much as we could all individually and also collectively certainly improve, I am far from convinced such perfection is worth the weight of such thick air. Much more exhilarating is the vast variety that comes with varying degrees of obedience and disobedience.
Obedience, compliance, conformity, submission, subservience. Where the lighter and more agreeable concepts of cooperation and collaboration run away from us into these heavy words might be a place we don’t want to go.
Japan of course has its counterculture, perhaps no more clearly displayed than within the Harajuku movement. But that, too, is an extreme. As much as it rebels, dressing in a Harajuku style itself is often a group activity.... [Continued in first comment]

Some of the subway and train cars in Japan are quite modern. And then others — quite a few, in fact — are extremely dated, featuring velvet fabrics, wood paneling, and pale, dusty colors. While Japan’s taste for these color schemes hasn’t entirely passed as it has here in the U.S., one still wonders why these train cars haven’t been changed out. But as a search for that answer begins, the fact that these cars still exist starts to stand out.
In the U.S., these would have been destroyed long ago by daily commuters, tourists, and the rest of the terrible humans that deface and destroy all things public far earlier than they would be through normal use. But in Japan, everywhere you go, it’s clear society as a whole cares (emotionally and, in turn, physically) for every part of the sphere of public space as though it were theirs… And what a concept, as it IS theirs! And that’s probably one of the most amazing things about Japan.
Equally as impressive as it must be impressing upon those who feel the responsibility society collectively expects them to carry, everyone plays a part in keeping up the town — only the “town” is all of Tokyo or Osaka or Kyoto. This all-encompassing group mentality is likely what contributes to a palpable coldness and rigidity in the passersby in the Japanese metros. The black and white swaths of people — hundreds of light faces peaking out of the hoods of dark coats — flurrying back and forth between work and home each day lack the variety present in, say, the people of San Francisco’s more varied apparel program.
As though some godly spirit passes judgment over each individual every minute of every day, every person lines up perfectly upon a single agreed-upon side of the escalator if choosing not to walk. No one dares cross even a short crosswalk along a non-bisected street before the walk signal comes on. And they don’t even wait impatiently. It is at once both refreshing and anxiety-provoking…..[cont. on V-Day]

Dark walkway along the water walking through Osaka on a quiet night. Osaka was an incredible experience. It’s famous for the food, but it’s here that we also met some incredible people at Beer Belly. A British expat and a local Japanese friend of his — both teachers at a school nearby — struck up a conversation with us when they saw my Hasselblad 203FE. We passed it around, talked about everything, shared a few IPAs from @minohbeer and three hours later they departed, sneakily leaving us with a cleared tab. So incredibly kind! We’ll never forget that trip. By the way, if anyone knows there to get Minoh Beer in the US, PLEASE tell me! #cinestill800t #nikon #f6 #35mm #beerbellyosaka #shotonfilm

Been a nice long while since I’ve posted, but we’ll see how this goes as I post again. Have quite the backlog of images to share. Another #osaka #japan shot, this time a little more moody, on #cinestill 800T #35mm #film . People sometimes think Tungsten-balanced films kill reds. I’m not sure why, but here’s a perfect example of amazing reds coming through and the film doing its magic to bring the balance to something more realistic and true to life. This film does all the work for you! Amazing.

I think this has to be one of my favorite shots from our #Japan trip earlier this year. Just shooting while walking around the thousands of restaurants #osaka and then this guy presents himself as a perfect subject. It’s great to get some personality without the subject noticing you... ;-) This is also a prime example of what makes #cinestill 800T such an amazing nighttime street shooting film. These colors!!!! Happy New Year’s Eve! A few shots from our #japan trip earlier this year coming up over the next few weeks. Sophie was sick this night , so I went out to shoot some late-night street photos and grab a bite to make the best of a sad situation.
