Have you ever looked up at the winter stars (or summer if you are in the southern hemisphere!) and noticed a little cluster of stars? the chances are you are looking at M45, otherwise known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters.
•
This cluster of stars when imaged close up reveals a beautiful reflection nebula known as the Merope nebula. The cluster is dominated by hot, intermediate-aged blue stars that light up the surrounding dust.
•
Capturing decent RGB data from my light polluted skies at home in the UK is a real challenge which is why I stick to narrowband for deep sky. I have to travel to find darker skies but they are not far away, and really it’s only a hop skip and a jump to decent skies such as the Canary Islands which are always a firm favourite of mine for an astro fix!
•
That being said this is my first time using a remote observatory to capture data for me. This data was captured using the @grand.mesa.observatory in Colorado. Really impressed with the quality of the skies and data but to be honest I didn't expect anything less.
•
Calibrated/stacked in Pixinsight - post processed in Pixinsight and Photoshop.
•
Clear skies!

It's the #SpaceStation20th anniversary! 20 years ago today, the first International Space Station (@iss) component was launched, beginning the construction of the largest and most complex international science and engineering project in history.
Today, the station is the largest space vehicle ever built and a unique laboratory for conducting research in a wide variety of scientific disciplines. Including its solar arrays, it is as large as a football field. The habitable volume in its various international modules is larger than a six-bedroom house. More than 230 individuals from 18 countries have visited the station. As a laboratory, the station has hosted more than 2,500 scientific investigations from more than 100 countries.

The star cluster you see in the upper right side of the picture is the Pleiades also known as the seven divine sisters. I was drawn to this cluster before I knew much about the night sky or anything to do with astrophotography. It’s so magnificent and just stands out in the night. Here’s a little sample of it’s fascinating history to us human beings provided by the TV show and book Cosmos by Carl Sagan.

“Cultures around the world have developed stories for how the Pleiades star cluster — sometimes known as the seven sisters — formed in the night sky. Native Americans thought the cluster formed when a group of women chased by bears asked a stone to help them run from the animals. The stone rose up, protecting them and forming Devil's Tower in Wyoming. The women then became the stars of the cluster.”

Mars in the Loop
Image Credit & Copyright: Tunc Tezel (TWAN)
Explanation: This composite of images spaced some 5 to 9 days apart, from late April (bottom right) through November 5 (top left), traces the retrograde motion of ruddy-colored Mars through planet Earth's night #sky. To connect the dots and dates in this 2018 Mars retrograde loop, just slide your cursor over the picture (and check out this animation). But Mars didn't actually reverse the direction of its orbit. Instead, the apparent backwards motion with respect to the background stars is a reflection of the motion of the Earth itself. Retrograde motion can be seen each time #Earth overtakes and laps planets orbiting farther from the Sun, the Earth moving more rapidly through its own relatively close-in orbit. On July 27, Mars was near its favorable 2018 parihelic opposition, when #Mars was closest to the Sun in its orbit while also opposite the Sun in Earth's sky. For that date, the frame used in this composite was taken during the total lunar eclipse.

Orionids Meteors over Inner Mongolia
Image Credit & Copyright: Yin Hao
Explanation: Meteors have been shooting out from the constellation of Orion. This was expected, as October is the time of year for the Orionids Meteor Shower. Pictured here, over two dozen meteors were caught in successively added exposures last October over Wulan Hada volcano in Inner Mongolia, China. The featured image shows multiple meteor streaks that can all be connected to a single small region on the sky called the radiant, here visible just above and to the left of the belt of Orion, The Orionids meteors started as sand sized bits expelled from Comet Halley during one of its trips to the inner Solar System. #Comet Halley is actually responsible for two known meteor showers, the other known as the Eta Aquarids and visible every May. An Orionids image featured on APOD one year ago today from the same location shows the same car. Next month, the Leonids #Meteor Shower from Comet Tempel-Tuttle should also result in some bright meteor streaks.
