#30YearsOfMiata Story 14/30: Scott Rueweler.
In 2010, Scott was at @FlyinMiata summer camp when he blew an intercooler hose and had to take it to a shop for repairs. Little did he know at the time that this pitstop would change his life. “I was standing in the front office, talking to one of their vehicle techs,” Scott explained. “When I turned around, she was standing there, looking beautiful. And I said, ‘Oh my God, that's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my life.” After months of dating, they’d go on to marry. Scott now shares his love for his MX-5 with his wife, who he describes as his favorite passenger. She’s also made him promise never to sell his MX-5 under any circumstances. “The MX-5 is just so much fun to drive,” Scott explained. “And if I'm having a bad day or if something is going on, I just hop in the car for ten minutes with the top down, and everything's better. They're just great, fun little cars. I love them.”

#30YearsOfMiata Story 13/30: Skip and LeighAnn Severance.
Skip decided to surprise his wife with a new car. After researching a number of different cars and makers, Skip landed on Mazda. “The light bulb finally went off that Mazda's been around forever,” Skip explained.

Once Skip found the perfect car, a red 2012 MX-5, it was time for the big reveal. For LeighAnn’s birthday, Skip took her out to dinner at the local Red Robin restaurant. He had called ahead and arranged to have the car parked right out in front so they had to walk by it to get into the restaurant.

As they walked toward the car, Skip slowed their pace. Upon taking a closer look at the car, LeighAnn remarked, Man, that's a neat car. This is a really cool car! As she circled the car, her two sons, daughter-in-law and three grandkids who were in on the surprise all came out from their hiding spots in nearby bushes to add to the surprise. “Finally, I took out the keys to the car and I gave them to my grandson. I told him to give them to Grandma and say, ‘Why don't you see if these keys will fit the car?, Skip said. “When LeighAnn realized what I'd done, she started crying,” Skip added. “She got in the car, and couldn't stop smiling. The restaurant was in on it, half the customers were in on it, the employees were in on it. Everybody's coming out, applauding and cheering.”

#30YearsOfMiata Story 12/30: Joe Burns.
For Joe Burns, driving and owning an MX-5 Miata has become a family affair. “These aren’t cars,” Burns explained. “They're part of our family. They build memories for life. Even to this day, we'll just hop in the car and take a drive and make a new memory for the family. It really has created a lot of life experiences and memories for us.” One special tradition that Burns and his daughter have is grabbing breakfast while taking the MX-5 out for a spin. “When she comes home,” Burns explained, “we always take an early Saturday morning drive to catch breakfast. You could not ask for anything more.”

#30YearsOfMiata Story 11/30: Rona Dexler.
Rona’s had an infatuation with cars her whole life. From an early age, she frequently played with toy cars instead of dolls. This, in part, was because of her father’s passion for cars. As an automotive journalist, he’d definitely passed the car enthusiast gene on to her. “Now, at this point of my life,” Dexler said. “I've had an MX-5 longer than I've not had an MX-5.” Dexler currently serves as the president of the Southern California Miata Club that boasts more than 170 members throughout the region. Like most clubs, Dexler describes the club as being not just a community, but more like a family. “I especially feel it in the club,” Dexler said. “We've got a group of about 10 of us. We do all the events that we can. We call ourselves ‘The Usual Suspects,’ because it's just always that. We're family. At least that's how I feel about it. They're my family.”

#30YearsOfMiata Story 10/30: Cutter Montante.
After striking up a conversation with an MX-5 Miata enthusiast at his local arcade, Cutter’s obsession with the iconic roadster ignited. “From that day on,” Montante explained, “I sold my RX-7, bought an MX-5, and I've never looked back. I honestly don't think I'm ever going to own another car.” His passion for the MX-5 Miata has been contagious, too. He’s inspired his girlfriend and eight of his closest friends to purchase MX-5s. “All my friends and I now get to enjoy these cars together,” Montante explained. “We just drive around California, go to the beach and go up the mountains. We all have our cars uniquely set to our preferences; they’re expressions of us.”

#30YearsOfMiata Story 9/30: Rina Jacobson.
Sometimes cars are destined to be owned by a specific owner. That was the case for Rina Jacobson and her 2000 MX-5 Miata, which she bought in 2011--for the second time.
After falling in love with the MX-5 and owning one from 2000 to 2004, her daughter’s car seat no longer fit in the MX-5. Jacobson made the decision to part ways with her MX-5 and listed the car for sale, but it had to go to the right person.

Over the years, she and the buyer stayed in touch through email. In 2011, nearly eight years after selling her MX-5, he wanted to know if she was interested in buying it back. Elated by the offer, Jacobson couldn’t refuse the chance to get her MX-5 back. “I love my Great Pumpkin,” Jacobson said. “I can’t imagine not having it forever.”

#30YearsOfMiata Story 8/30: At 66 years old, Kaitlyn Lydell isn’t your typical race car driver. With more than 20 years of experience with the MX-5 Miata, serving as president of the Bay Area Miata Association and competitively racing her MX-5 for the last decade, Lydell is racing more than 30 days a year and couldn’t be happier. “I have been doing 30 to 35 track days a year. I'm having the time of my life. I never would have imagined this.” From the way the car handles to its beautiful, timeless design, there are many things that Lydell loves about her MX-5. Ultimately though, it comes down to the car’s spirit and lively driving dynamics. “The car is made for driving,” Kaitlyn explained. “It's freedom.”

#30YearsofMiata Story 7/30: Bob Ledesma.
Bob Ledesma bought his 1992 MX-5 Miata from a friend for only $500, with the promise of bringing it back to showroom condition. Since then, he has spent countless hours carefully restoring the car, sparing no detail. “It is in perfect condition,” Ledesma explained. “I even used a toothbrush and cotton swab to clean and wax the motor. I just started cleaning and never stopped cleaning. It's just a fun car.” Ledesma called the the project a “labor of love.” It wasn’t just the promise to his friend that pushed him to continue working on the car, but also the love for the car. Like his fellow MX-5 drivers, Ledesma doesn’t have just one thing he loves about his MX-5. “I really love this car and there are a few things that really stand out to me,” Ledesma explained. “The first thing is how dependable it is. Also, the way Mazda designed it, it's just so incredible. The 50/50 balance of the car makes driving the car fun. I also love when I put the top down and feel freedom. It's like you're flying almost.”

#30YearsOfMiata Story 6/30: @faeracing
Sarah Bantay’s 1994 MX-5 Miata had taken her from track to track, but her most memorable on-track experience was at the iconic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, formerly Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, for the annual “Miatas at Mazda Raceway” event. “I'll never forget flying down the Corkscrew for the first time, screaming with joy,” Bantay reflected. “I wasn't sure if it was me or my tires screaming but that didn't matter. I won't forget the sound, the feeling, the colors or the smell.” Bantay now owns a 2019 MX-5. After finding the exact car that she’d been looking for, she took a one-way flight from Southern California to Northern California to retrieve her new car. “Just going through Big Sur, going down the highway with the ocean on one side and trees and mountains on the other side, by myself with the top down,” Bantay reflected, “It was great.”
