Wow oh wow. I’ve just wrapped a week of exploring the Victoria High Country, and was completely blown away by this perfect corner of Australia. A few hours from Melbourne, you’ll find stunning valleys, beautiful villages, AMAZING food and heaps of wineries, along with some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. For the food lover and outdoor enthusiast like me, I was instantly fell in love with this region. Super excited to begin sharing more of my stories from there @seehighcountry #SeeHighCountry

One day I’ll learn to brush my hair, but today is not that day 🦁 Until then I often cover my messy mop up with hats and beanies. Even though it’s supposed to be summer in New Zealand, I’ve still been rocking some of my fave beanies, like this one from Fjallraven on @backcountry - link in my Stories and don’t forget to use code LIZC15 for 15% off your orders #goatworthy

Something about the mountains are calling, right? Nothing makes me feel alive quite like walking amongst giants like the Matterhorn in Switzerland - have you been? This was a day for the books, and I was so lucky to see her in all her glory peppered with little clouds as I climbed and scampered amongst the last remaining snow pockets of winter. I can only imagine how it must look now in the lead up to the holidays as the ski season kicks in ️ my parents have been asking me what I want for Christmas, a question that only gets harder as you get older. I dunno, wine? A puppy? This year was easy though, I’m slowly replacing all my hiking gear with ultralight options, from tents to sleeping mats to packs, so my wishlist is easy. And of course I made sure to pass on my @backcountry promo code LIZC15 for them to save 15% off my pressies (is that cheeky?) so excited to carry less weight than I have to on mountain climbs! #GOATworthy

Earlier this spring I spent a week up around the Hawke’s Bay and the East Cape of New Zealand, the last few regions I hadn’t really been to before. Wow oh wow did it amaze. I love this part of the country and am already planning to return back again deep in summer with my togs to do some bombs off this choice jetty eh. How’s my kiwi talk coming along? Am I a local yet? ️ @olympus_au #olympusinspired #MeTalkKiwiOneDay

As I continue to reflect on my experience with the stranded whales in New Zealand, I can’t help but remember all of the beautiful moments in my life with these amazing creatures in the wild. From being forced on whale watching tours with my dad as a kid bundled up in an embarrassing purple and teal onesie snow suit that only the 90’s could dream up to most recently in Antarctica, whales have been a part of me for as long as I can remember, holding an almost mythic presence in my memory.

Last summer I spent almost a month down in the Antarctic, and my first moment there was an extraordinary one. We sailed for days arriving at the Antarctic Peninsula at night, and giddy with excitement, I couldn’t sleep and was awake before 5am, eager for my first glimpse of the last continent. Awake before everyone else, I wandered towards the library to read when I caught a glimpse of a beautiful sunrise from the porthole with, you guessed it, whales right next to the ship. I ran outside only to be greeted by dozens of humpbacks feeding all around the ship, as the first rays of sun illuminated the surrounded snowcapped mountains: Antarctica. Holy shit, I’m really here!

Running back to my cabin I flung the door open and yelled “@jarradseng wake up! There are like a million whales outside right now,” before grabbing my camera and heading back out. With only the crew for company, and anchored in a calm spot, they let me out onto the normally closed bow of the ship to watch the whales. As I climbed up to the very bow of the ship, a humpback breached right in front of me. Eventually the rest of the ship woke up to watch this wonderful display by Mother Nature but no more whales breached after that. Is it weird to think that it was just for me?

I feel so grateful to have experiences like these of such incredible animals in their natural habitats. I’m convinced now more than ever I have to do all I can, the best I can, to protect and help them too #savethewhales

The first time I saw glowworms in New Zealand was over 5 years ago on an action packed trip with @legendaryblackwaterraftingco in the Waitomo Caves. Gazing up it felt like I was looking at a universe of blue stars turns out I was looking at a ceiling of bright shiny maggots! I love Mother Nature ️ Māori call them titiwai, which refers to lights reflected in water, and they are carnivorous glowing larvae that drip down a long sticky thread in dark damp environments that entangle insects they attract with their glowing lights! Too cool!

Yesterday was my first day home since finding the stranded pilot whales and I’ve been oscillating between a million different feelings, from anger, hurt and a profound sadness I don’t know how I will ever shake. How am I supposed to move on?

In a few days everyone will forget this story, continuing on with the rhythm of their lives. I logically understand everything but my heart is still broken. I still have to go on with these memories, the ghosts of these beautiful creatures following me.

I close my eyes and I hear them all again.

I’m probably talking about it too much but it feels so tremendous I can’t keep it in, and writing this is weirdly therapeutic and the kind replies are soothing. Seeing and talking with the incredible people at @projectjonahnz, a NZ nonprofit that is dedicated to protecting marine mammals like pilot whales, is helping too.

But somehow nothing else seems to matter right now. I am trying to continue but all I want to do is throw my computer across the room. Who cares? How can I ever get excited to write again? Photograph again? Create again? I feel tainted and damaged and heartsick. I feel useless and broken.

Some small part of me died on that beach with those 145 whales, the last of my childhood innocence, that I didn’t know I still had, is gone.

I don’t know how to cope with this grief. Help me. How am I supposed to move forward after this?

Saturday night was the worst night of my entire life. 50kms into a 5 day tramp on the remote west coast of Stewart Island, we were wandering back to our camp at at sunset and came across hundreds of pilot whales becoming beached in the low surf. When we realized the horror of what we were seeing, we dropped everything and ran straight into the water.

Desperately we grabbed their tails and pushed and yelled, before we got hammered by them thrashing around. It was useless - they were so big and heavy and the realization we could do nothing to save them was the worst feeling I’ve ever experienced.

We were in a place with no people, no service, no help. @ju_riviera was a champion and took off running at 8:30pm in his wet sandy clothes and boots almost 15 kilometers back to a base hut up the bay where we knew there were DOC rangers working who would have a radio. He made it in 1.5 hours to raise the alarm, and I stayed with the whales til dark, sitting with them, dragging the smallest baby back in the water every few minutes before it would rebeach itself, and throwing water over the drier whales until my hands were numb from the water and wind.

I’ll never forget their cries, the way they watched me as I sat with them in the water, how they desperately tried to swim but their weight only dug them deeper into the sands. My heart completely broke. When the realization there was no hope, it was almost dark, high tide was in the middle of the night and knowing this was one of the most remote places in New Zealand, I knew they would inevitable die. I sank to my knees in the sand screaming in frustration and crying, with the sound of dozens of dying whales behind me, utterly alone.

It would take close to 1000 people to save them, more than double the whole population of Rakiura. The only positive bit was thanks to us alerting everyone, they were able to euthanize them shortly afterwards, and my heart hurts for the man who had that horrific job, and would have done anything to save them too. Otherwise it would have likely been days before anyone even knew the whales were there and a very long painful slow death for them all.

I’ll never be the same after this.

Good morning world! Really enjoyed watching the day begin from the lakefront in Rotorua part of my morning routine has become ignoring my phone for the first 30 minutes to an hour after I wake up. While I don’t always succeed, I find a simple happiness in a little routine without any messages or beeps or reminders. Like waking up, tossing on clothes and walking down to the jetty to watch sunrise. I recommend! @rotoruanz #rotoruanz #rotorualakefront
