Progressing towards strict handstand push ups

I had 5x5 strict handstand push ups in my training yesterday and I forgot how tough these are for me. I think I only got through 4 sets before failing but I was pretty proud of that!🤨 Strict handstand push ups require a lot of total body control and utilize a ton of different muscle groups. These target your shoulders, your pecs, delts, triceps, your core, glutes and all of your stabilizing muscles.

I love incorporating this exercise into my strength training. Are there other, safer exercises that you can utilize to build shoulder & core strength? Definitely! But I am falling in love with gymnastics training, because I love how much total body control it takes to master those skills and I think that utilizing your body weight, and building body-weight strength and functionality is a huge advantage and translates great into every day life.🤸‍️

But I can't even do a handstand! That's ok! Start with becoming proficient at regular push ups, and getting comfortable being inverted. There are many different ways to practice and progress to being inverted. You can practice tripods, pike push-ups, forearm stands, handstands off of a box, handstands against the wall and free-standing handstands (to name a few). After you have the body awareness, comfort and strength to hold yourself upside-down, and preform good quality push-ups and presses you can start to work your way towards these.

This is Maui on the last portion of the workout yesterday. He is applying with multiple LE agencies in the area. As an older candidate we want to make sure that he can score in the top on his PT test.

Long distance cardio and the likes there of can be done outside of the time he is in the gym. My guys and girls are in three days a week. The end of this workout is a varied type of cardio with jumps, and a variety in changes of direction. This is round 5 so needless to say he was a bit wrecked. The goal on the jumps is minimal contact before exploding back up to the next box.

1) Belt Squat 5,5,5,5,5
2) 4 Rounds of Fat Bar Pull ups(Max) and 10 DB RDL's
3) 4 Rounds of 8 Reverse Hypers at 50% of 1RM on Squats and 25 Banded Face Pulls
4) 5 Rounds of 10 yard shuffle, 20 yard sprint, 10 yard shuffle, 20 yard sprint, consecutive box jump of 20, 24, 30 inches.

Had a killer back and bicep workout this morning. Took that momentum and put it in my run. But at mile 1.5 I hit a wall. Bad stomach cramps and shin splints. Thought about walking or going back then I thought about my WHY. That got me through it, pushed me and finished 10 miles, 4 more than I expected. Wasn’t pretty, wasn’t graceful but I got it done. .
When you hit your wall, you need to make sure your why is stronger than that wall. Without that why, you won’t be able to break through that wall and keep going. Have a great Tuesday everyone and get it done. .

I started recording in round two and already felt like I was dying 🤣 I used 15lb weights for the weighted exercises, attempted 20’s for the shoulder press, and well, I’m not there yet lol.

Today I wore a shirt I received from a guy who competed for the USA in Russia at a world competition in arm wrestling and he placed 4th, IN THE WORLD !!!!

So as I sit, during my rest, between sets of lat pulldowns, I think my God the commitment it took to get there! Pushing your limits everyday....never phoning it in, seeking out stronger and stronger competition, learning from them and never ever stop pushing to be the best. 
There are days when I say well something is better than nothing, and while this can be true, it will not get you to world competition level. Don't get me wrong we all start somewhere, but I can no longer keep swimming in the same place being complacent. After thinking about this guy's drive and determination to get where he wanted to be, you better believe I pushed that weight to failure today...every set, every rep, was made with determination.
️‍️️‍️️‍️️‍️
While he no longer competes professionally, I had the pleasure of attending a local competition (how I got the shirt) where even after all these years he still kicked butt and placed against a much younger crowd. And you know what I saw? The younger competitors coming over shaking hands and asking for tips, which he happily gave to them. The commradery I saw between these competitors was inspiring. Respect was mutual and no one was there to see you fail, they were there to support each other, and the sport they love. 
So my lesson today for myself.. push or you will not get where you're going; learn from those who you can; and support those rising behind you.

To say I’ve been in a funk is an understatement. Working out 2x a day, gallon of water, reading, sticking to diet, no alcohol, daily progress pic, saying ‘no thank you’...a lot, and I am feeling lower than ever. .
.
Last Monday I went in to get quoted to repair an umbilical hernia. One of the first things out of this surgeons mouth was that I needed an abdominalplasty. “A what?!” I thought. I’ve been overweight, I’ve had two kids, so yes my abdomen is looser than when I was 20 something. I don’t have loose skin, and yes I still have pockets of fat that just does NOT want to dissipate. But a tummy tuck?! .
.
I left feeling completely defeated. I still do to be quite honest. All of the hard work, dedication , consistency... will lead to nothing from what I’m told. .
.
So, my feelings the last week has been #whatsthepoint 🤷‍️
.
.
I don’t really have an answer as to how I’m going to mentally get over this, other than just to continue what I’ve been doing. ‘Beauty’ is only skin deep but keeping my body healthy from the inside is what ultimately matters the most to me. .

The Process.

The beginning is always the hardest and defeating.

I was never one to be able to grow legs to the way I feel are big, but it was only because I wasn’t doing everything I could to make them grow.

It’s easy for us to train everything else 2x a week, but when it comes to legs we dismiss it so easily because of the pain you must undergo to get results.

More importantly effective dieting when doing legs. Believe it or not doing legs promotes growth throughout the body.

When I do legs 2 or 3 times a week, those days I’m doubling my carb intake to aid in the growth while I put myself through 2 hours of pain.

The only bad thinking is trying to get your legs and ass in your jeans hahaha.

Trust the process and know that pain is weakness leaving the body.

At the gym yesterday, a gentleman approached me and said “you are my motivation for today’s workout.”

I honestly didn’t know what to say, I’m not anything special, I’m just doing what I can with what I have. I really wanted to do some kettlebell cleans and couldn’t get the clearance while kneeling on the ground. So I set up some boxes, kneeled over the gap, and made it work.
.
As cliche as it sounds, you’re going to have to find a way when situations aren’t opportune. And trust me, there will always be circumstances that make it challenging to reach your goal.
.
One week till I’m walking. Then it’s go time. Then it’s time to dig in and make it happen. I’m dying to be horseback. And you best believe I’m going to be ready to ride.

As I reflect after having just completed a half marathon, I take a further look back at the start of my fitness journey compared to now.

When I first started getting into fitness, I was a skinny mini with no self-esteem and no muscle. I was unhappy with how I looked because I never thought I was thin enough. I barely broke 100 lbs until about sophomore year of high school, and was terrified of gaining weight. I struggled with an eating disorder and used exercise as a way to shrink myself down more and more. I remember feeling awful and weak and wondering if there was a better way. So instead of focusing on my appearance, I focused on putting in hard work and lifting for strength.

Flash forward to now, and I'm astounded as to how much I've achieved. I've done everything from obstacle races to CrossFit and completed a half marathon. I never thought that I could condition myself  to be a strong as I am today. And I only hope to get stronger.

So while I see all my self-perceived flaws and everything I wish to improve on now, I'm tremendously proud of all the progress I've made from years ago. 
Remember where you started and keep pushing on. You can only get stronger from here.

The difference between these two photos are:
 4 weeks & 1 pound
eating MORE calories
🥑 focusing on eating more WHOLE foods
 drinking a gallon of water a day
 NO alcohol ‍️ working out 5-6x a week •
Yes, this is a 4-week difference and I only lost 1lb. This is why it’s SO important to not stress about the number on the scale. Pay attention more to how you feel and how your clothes fit. And taking progress pictures are huge!!
During these 4 weeks I also started eating a lot more carbs & fats which, ultimately, upped my calories by 500. So, in order to maintain that weight, I learned I wasn’t eating enough when I started!! •
By focusing on eating more WHOLE foods I got to eat a lot more and felt fuller longer. •
Drinking all the water kept me hydrated and feeling great, giving me more energy and helping my body flush out toxins. •
Yes, sorry, no alcohol ‍️

The majority of my workouts were, and continue to be 20-30 minutes, that’s all!! Some days were longer because I wanted them to be and I had the time. But you don’t have to spend hours in a gym to get results. Most of my workouts were HIIT or crossfit style, some with just body weight or a simple set of dumbbells. 
You don’t even need a gym to workout!! •
I also made sure to properly refuel my body after workouts! Post workout nutrition is SO vital to the recovery process and getting the results you want!! •

One of the biggest things that has helped me stick to my programs is discovering my TRUE WHY.  I use this idea to help my clients stay on track.

See, when I ask a client, “Why do you want to lose weight?” I initially get common answers like:
.
- Want to look good for a wedding
- Want to look better at the lake this Summer
- Want to just get healthier
.
NONE of these will keep you picking yourself off the ground over and over as life kicks you in the teeth.
.
NONE of these are enough to keep you getting up before 5am for months or years at a time.
.
NONE of these will keep you from quitting when you are exhausted or sick or injured or just plain lose motivation as doubt creeps in that maybe you can’t actually reach your goals.
.
So What keeps successful clients from quitting?
.
“I want my wife to be proud of the husband she married and I want her to want to have sex with me again.”
.
“I want to lose weight so I can live long enough to see my grandchildren graduate”
.
“I want to lose weight to prove to my entire family who is also overweight that we are not genetically cursed”
.
THATS the stuff that keeps my dedicated clients from quitting.
.
You need a WHY that can help you OVERCOME any and every excuse that will come your way.
.
Look in the mirror or get a fried, and ask”Why do I want this?”, and as you get one answer, ask again “Why is it important that _______?” (use previous answer in the blank).
.
DIG DEEPER.  The deeper you go, the stronger Your WHY.
.

This is a great book to read. I try to live daily by thinking big. I want to be better than yesterday and be driven to grow daily. Each day our minds our filled with goals and dreams, the difference between most is only some will do something with those thoughts and others will sit back and be content. STOP being content. I have been working pretty hard to make some serious changes and I can tell you how frustrating it is to jump on the scale and see everything happening but what I want. The number drops .2lbs or jumps 1lb or just stays stagnant. I’m executing on my plan and it can be discouraging to not see those numbers change.⁣
⁣
I try to remind myself that just because that number isn’t moving, doesn’t mean changes aren’t happening. Which is why I’ve tried to shift to tracking pictures with that number on the scale. Pictures really do tell all.⁣
⁣
Another little trick....buying smaller clothes! The T Shirt I am wearing I intentionally purchased in a XL with the goal of being able to wear it someday. It’s a great feeling when you fit into a smaller size and a great way to measure your progress.⁣

What type of diet is best?
I don’t know what to eat.
I know I need to eat less...
I need to quit eating so many carbs!
I have got to stop eating out every night.
My diet has been terrible.🤦‍️

These are all statements I’ve said to myself in the past and things I hear from so many of the clients I work with. Nutrition can be a frustrating battle of ups and downs and a whole lot of confusion!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, what I have found to work the BEST for me and so many of my clients comes down to 2 things:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Eating the right amount of protein consistently to increase fat loss results (1g per lean body weight or goal weight).
2. Eating the right amount of calories consistently (body weight or goal weight x10-12 for fat loss).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s it. It’s not a complicated process or crazy restrictive diet to follow. It’s not drink 3 shakes a day, starve yourself and do a 10-day cleanse. It’s a long-term sustainable approach that delivers results!

Everyone’s always looking for a new diet or new ‘thing’ to buy that’s marketed towards weight loss. Don’t get caught up in the quick fixes like I did for so many years. Understand that if you want to lose the weight and keep it off, start with increasing your protein first and eating the right amount of calories each day.

Who hates having to sit all day long?

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my job but I truly hate that it has me sitting on my ass most of the day. My body hates it more than I do. It tells how much it hates me when it gets stiff and uncomfortable.
•
There is nothing worse than heading into the gym with these feelings.
•
Let’s unstick our bodies and get moving.
•
Here is a common sequence I learned from #MobilityMVMNT
 Windsheild wipers x 10 each leg
 90/90 glute stretch x 5 deep breaths and allowing yourself to get deeper with each exhale.
 Upper back rotation x5 deep breaths and rotating through the upper back using your chin as guidance and not twisting through the low back.
 Lat/QL stretch x 5 deep breaths. Dropping onto the elbow the same arm as the front hip, reach up and over with opposing arm. With each breath rotate your chest down to the floor.
•
These are four simple movements we can utilize everyday to improve our mind and body. To unstuck ourselves from the desk life.
•
P.s. I have only shown my right side but don’t forget to stretch the other side too.
