I committed to the 3-month Squat Protocol with @hybridperformancemethod to bring up my weakest lift, correct muscular imbalances, and improve overall lower body composition. Here’s a sampling of some of the accessory movements I’m doing as part of the program.

1️⃣Heavy Barbell Marches: This is my sub for a yoke carry. You can’t squat 400lbs if you can’t walk with it!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣Belt Squats/Marches: I love this new machine @balancegym . I find it to be a solid alternative to the leg press/hack squat with a movement pattern that should translate more to powerlifting and Olympic lifting. Squats are higher reps with a strong lockout. Marches are for 2:00-3:00 at a time.

3️⃣Bulgarian Split Squats: Lots of unilateral leg work in the program. Doing these on the Smith Machine so I don’t kill myself or others around me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4️⃣Slow Tempo GHR: A highly effective way to increase time under tension. Holy hamstrings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5️⃣KB Swings/Banded RDL: Hip hinge movements that will definitely translate to my deadlift.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6️⃣Barbell Hip Thrusts/Reverse Hyperextensions: Certainly helping with glute activation, which I tend to struggle with. Hoping that directly strengthening  the glutes will help prevent the hip flexors/TFL from compressing in the bottom of the squat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Accessories are usually done after some type of heavy squat variation, and spread out across the entire week. Progressive overload is always the goal. Get stronger at the accessories, and you’ll build a stronger squat.

I’m doing upper body maintenance work once a week, and will often add some light conditioning to help boost recovery.

With over a decade of experience in coaching, Thomas Butler has a resume that includes athletes from a wide variety of disciplines including powerlifting, strongman, track and field, and American football. A 2009 graduate of Clemson University, Thomas has helped produce multiple all time top-20 results for clients in the world of powerlifting. After nearly ten years of training for and competing in powerlifting, Thomas shifted his focus to “the sport of fitness”. As a Crossfit Level 1 trainer, he’s used this experience to inform his perspectives on loading, GPP, and periodization for athletes seeking strength, conditioning, or some combination of the two.

Thomas is our resident Sports Performance expert and Crossfit Certified Coach. He’ll be handling all of the one on one coaching in these areas as well as being a regular on podcasts and an author/collaborator on a lot of new content we’re cooking up.

So I finally lifted some things today, so there’s that. And while we’re on the subject of not being mean to ourselves (see what I did there?!) I also need to be reminded that L.I.F.E. HAPPENS. K. Hear that self? Life happens and sometimes you get sick and sometimes your boyfriend surprises you by coming home from his work assignment early and you miss a few days in the gym. -°-
It’s like I need this to be engrained in my brain that it just do be like that sometimes. And there is more to life than the weights. Althoughhhhhh they still reign very important. 🤫 So friends. Failed my first non-max squat in well over a year today, but before I dropped the weight it had the pleasure of sliding down my back before cascading to the earth in the middle of a packed gym. I sat there for a second in disbelief because I NEVER fail submax squats, ask anybody that has ever lifted with me. It happened because I'm adjusting to squatting with no mirror, and I lost my balance because my proprioception isn't perfect and I didn't know where I was in space for a second. Training has been going awful of late, with very unimpressive rep tests sprinkled throughout and this is just the cherry on top. Thankfully I'm not injured, but I know this is gonna hurt like a bitch come tomorrow. Life has punched me in my mouth again and it's time for me to get up. 
I refuse to have a bad meet.

About 5 years ago all I did was Insanity and play basketball. I would occasionally pick up a few weights but with all of the crazy extra cardio I did I had NO time fo that 🤨. I was a psychopath when it came to what I ate (shit had to be “CLEAN” whatever). I rarely took a day off and burned myself out eventually.  I dabbled in CrossFit in college but it costed WAY too much. Jumped into bodybuilding after college (for about 2yrs) and then got bored AF. Found weightlifting and haven’t looked back since ‍️. HOW TO: SQUAT

Here are my tips to perfecting your squat so you can feel more confident on your next leg day  WOOHOO -

1️⃣ ties forward for athletic stance  toes slightly out for greater range of motion/ tight hips/ targeting outer booty 
2️⃣ chest up, shoulders back, lats engaged, core braced - avoid falling forward 
3️⃣ drive through your heels, not your toes - think about driving the ground down and away 
4️⃣ keep your knees strong and in line with your toes 
5️⃣ avoid the booty wink to keep tension on your glutes and a neutral spine
6️⃣ avoid the butt tuck at the top to prevent low back pain 
7️⃣ mind to muscle connection is everything. Move slow and take your time learning the correct form before moving up in weight. -

Happy hump day  here’s my deadlifts and overhead press for today. Deadlifts are kinda awkward for me with these hex plates but it’s all my gym has /: anyway, I did 195x5 and for overhead press I was supposed to do 3x5 but this is my first time using 65lbs so I didn’t make the 5 reps lool

I have been working on my wrist mobility for a few weeks so it was nice to get a full grip on the bar, which made a big difference. Definitely a bit more in the tank here.
