“Waiting with folded arms for all conditions to ripen is tantamount to refusing to make a revolution. Primary importance, therefore, should be given to the ideological factor in the revolutionary struggle and construction work, and on this basis strenuous efforts should be made to create all the necessary conditions. Solving all problems by raising the level of people’s consciousness is the method inherent to the communists. The communists who struggle for the freedom and happiness of the people, lead the revolution to victory and fulfil their noble mission by awakening people ideologically and making them conscious and encouraging them to undertake the struggle of their own accord. The communists have a powerful ideological weapon capable of awakening all the people to activity. Although the capitalist class, too, strives to spread its ideology, capitalist thinking cannot be accepted by the masses as their own because it fundamentally conflicts with their interests. Only the working-class ideology which champions the interests of the working masses can be accepted by all the people, and it alone can dominate the whole society. Doing everything by awakening people politically and ideologically is a solid guarantee for the triumph of the revolution and construction. Reliance on the high degree of the masses revolutionary consciousness will give a strong impetus to the revolutionary struggle and construction work, overcome unfavourable conditions and speed up the victory of the revolution.”

The following clips which I have compiled alongside the song are of farms from all across North Korea, where farmers were interviewed and shown going about their daily life. Also, you may have noticed the farming villages and communities with a water park, computers, running water, a stove, tv, etc. Countless services, activities, educational programs and items are being provided and used by the people who are feeding society.

Two factory managers describe work place management during the cultural revolution. Unlike in capitalist society, workplaces were not run by one person. Rather factories, many farms, stores, etc were run directly by the workers themselves, and would be managed by regionally elected managers who come straight from the backbone of the working class. These managers would often be put back into the workforce to work alongside their cadres to understand the needs and conditions of the working people. A council of managers and workers would meet up, and they would discuss issues, suggestions or desires from the workforce in order to further or improve production conditions.

The Juche idea is a new philosophical thought which centres on man. As the leader said, the Juche idea is based on the philosophical principle that man is the master of everything and decides everything. The Juche idea raised the fundamental question of philosophy by regarding man as the main factor, and elucidated the philosophical principle that man is the master of everything and decides everything. That man is the master of everything means that he is the master of the world and of his own destiny; that man decides everything means that he plays the decisive role in transforming the world and in shaping his destiny. The philosophical principle of the Juche idea is the principle of man-centred philosophy which explains man’s position and role in the world. The leader made it clear that man is a social being with independence, creativity and consciousness.

Many will say Mao destroyed culture and the Tibetan people, but it was clearly upheld and protected through the arts and words of the communist party and the masses.
If you have any questions on Tibetan culture under Mao, I recommend reading the essay I’ve provided earlier on my account. Or you can DM me, for a less detailed answer.

This clip is complete footage of worker democracy, and management in progress during the Cultural Revolution. Workers would often discuss and debate all topics from production, the value they receive from their labour (as seen above), managers, time spent working, etc. Worker councils did exist, though it was done through workers voted into manager positions or the workers themselves, deciding how the workplace should be run. The more rural, the more worker oriented. In many areas it was decided by democratically elected managers, though not always. People were paid according to the work they did, the harder the worker the more they earned back in return. In the clip above, they are debating Liu Shaoqi’s policies and ideas, revolving around what a worker would get in return for their labour. This is the debate regarding revisionism, which is what led to the very downfall as Liu Shaoqi.

Generator Factory workers explain salary, work life and worker management during the Cultural Revolution. They also explain how the Cultural Revolution had changed the workplace from the old society. These workplaces are made up of men and women alike, and all are paid according to the value of their efforts and their skills which they acquire over time. These workers also reveal how work life has become more straight forward, allowing late workers to be able to explain why they were late and be fine, instead of having pay taken off for not showing up on time. This was prominent in the old society, yet had been almost eliminated because of the efforts of the Cultural Revolution.

“In order to guarantee that our Party and country do not change their colour, we must not only have a correct line and correct policies but must train and bring up millions of successors who will carry on the cause of proletarian revolution. In the final analysis, the question of training successors for the revolutionary cause of the proletariat is one of whether or not there will be people who can carry on the Marxist-Leninist revolutionary cause started by older generation of proletarian revolutionaries, whether or not the leadership of our Party and state will remain in the hands of proletarian revolutionaries, whether our not our descendants will continue to march along the correct road laid down by Marxism-Leninism, or, in other words, whether or not we can successfully prevent the emergence of Khrushchov’s revisionism in China. In short, it is an extremely important question, a matter of life and death for our Party and our country. It is a question of fundamental importance to the proletarian revolutionary cause for a hundred, a thousand, nay ten thousand years. Basing themselves on the changes in the Soviet Union, the imperialist prophets are pinning their hopes of “peaceful evolution” on the third or fourth generation of the Chinese Party. We must shatter these imperialist prophecies. From our highest organizations down to the grass roots, we must everywhere give constant attention to the training and upbringing of successors to the revolutionary cause...

Many today claim that Chairman Mao Zedong executed his political enemies and in the party during the Cultural Revolution. This claim is regurgitated so much so that people will without hesitation, accuse Mao Zedong of surmounting the accused deaths of Stalin, and even Adolf Hitler. What information can lead too such an idea, and how do people confidently spread it, without understanding the origin of such information themselves? My first critique comes from analyzing the interpersonal relationships between Mao and his rivals, as well as the movements he led which can be differentiated between other Chinese party officials movements and groups during the Cultural Revolution. Mobo Gao explained it nicely in The Battle for China’s Past, “Before Mao came to dominant positions in the CCP he was sidelined and demoted by Bo Gu, Zhang Wentian and Zhou Enlai. Bo Gu and Zhang Wentian suffered in their careers and Zhang even underwent humiliation later in life, but they were not executed by Mao. Zhou Enlai served as the Premier of PRC until the last day of his life. When Zhang Guotao, another of Mao’s rivals, defected to the Nationalists Mao agreed to let his wife and children join him. During the Sixth Congress of the CCP Mao worked hard to keep Wang Ming, another of Mao’s political opponents, as a member of the CCP Central Committee and Wang later migrated to the Soviet Union and died there. Peng Dehuai was demoted in 1959 and sidelined and humiliated and even brutally beaten up by some Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution. But Peng died of bowel cancer in 1974. Liu Shaoqi was persecuted and humiliated; but he died of a natural death (though he might have lived longer had he not suffered the strain of persecution). Chang and Halliday have to admit that it was Mao who rejected a report recommending the execution of Liu Shaoqi’s wife. In order to twist this fact in their favour Chang and Halliday make a claim that would be comic if it were not for the fact that it was about life and death: that Mao wanted Liu and his wife Wang Guangmei’s slow death by torture. So slow that Wang was still alive in the twenty-first century”

What we have to deal with here is a communist society, not as it has developed on its own foundations, but, on the contrary, just as it emerges from capitalist society; which is thus in every respect, economically, morally, and intellectually, still stamped with the birthmarks of the old society from whose womb it emerges. Accordingly, the individual producer receives back from society -- after the deductions have been made -- exactly what he gives to it. What he has given to it is his individual quantum of labor. For example, the social working day consists of the sum of the individual hours of work; the individual labor time of the individual producer is the part of the social working day contributed by him, his share in it. He receives a certificate from society that he has furnished such-and-such an amount of labor (after deducting his labor for the common funds); and with this certificate, he draws from the social stock of means of consumption as much as the same amount of labor cost. The same amount of labor which he has given to society in one form, he receives back in another.

Here, obviously, the same principle prevails as that which regulates the exchange of commodities, as far as this is exchange of equal values. Content and form are changed, because under the altered circumstances no one can give anything except his labor, and because, on the other hand, nothing can pass to the ownership of individuals, except individual means of consumption. But as far as the distribution of the latter among the individual producers is concerned, the same principle prevails as in the exchange of commodity equivalents: a given amount of labor in one form is exchanged for an equal amount of labor in another form.

“Many things may become baggage, may become encumbrances, if we cling to them blindly and uncritically. Let us take some illustrations. Having made mistakes you may feel that, come what may, you are saddled with them and so become dispirited; if you have not made mistakes, you may feel that you are free from error and so become conceited. Lack of achievement in work may breed pessimism and depression, while achievement may breed pride and arrogance. A comrade with a short record of struggle may shirk responsibility on this account, while a veteran may become opinionated because of his long record of struggle. Worker and peasant comrades, because of pride in their class origin, may look down upon intellectuals, while intellectuals, because they have a certain amount of knowledge, may look down upon worker and peasant comrades. Any specialized skill may be capitalized on and so led to arrogance and contempt for others. Even ones age may become ground for conceit. The young, because they are bright and capable, may look down upon the old; and the old, because they are rich in experience, may look down upon the young. All such things become encumbrances or baggage is there is no critical awareness.”
