Like sands through an hourglass, these are the days of our lives.

I had the privilege of spending a day with this young lady almost 5 years ago when she was just 20 years old. She was in Singapore to film for a tv series for the Australian network. My job was to introduce to her some key brands to look out for in Singapore and we brought her out for chicken rice after.(she decided to take her chances and balanced herself on a wobbly stool while wearing a leather dress and high-heels just to take a picture of the food) I have been following her on social media ever since.

Now, she is considered as a BOF 500 which is a definitive professional index for people who are shaping the $2.4 trillion fashion industry.
What can I learn from this experience/her?
Nothing stays the same. In life, in business and your personal being. Everything evolves. For example, fashion has become more than just about clothes, designing and styling. It is amazing how her passion has evolved and grown to cover so many areas in the industry and how she puts herself outside the box.
How do we challenge ourselves to be outside the box in the way we live our lives?

The ice age of retail?

I stumbled on an article recently on how the retail scene on our shopping district is dying. According to the writer, an ultimatum is needed.
It is an issue that has been discussed upon since the launch of online shopping.
I believe the reason why it is dying is because most stores and retail property owners are not adapting to the evolution of retail.  Which has only encouraged most consumers to move online.
One way or another, the ice age for retail is here. All the fluff and renovations can only do so much.
According to Forbes and Vogue, 2018 is the year of pop-ups, estimated to be a $50 Billion dollar industry.  Personally I feel, the benefits for such ventures are more than just financial… if you do it right.
What did I learn from my most recent pop-up with United Arrows Japan?
1) Great way to test out a new revenue system
2) Enable you to test new products and concepts
3) Use it as a marketing opportunity
4) Timing is everything
5) Omni- channel retail is the future
I personally believe this is an exciting time for change. For all of us, change can be scary but adapting and upgrading ourselves is the only way forward for our businesses as well as in life.

This is Mr P.
He is a very private person and mostly recognisable by his ring.
He doesn’t like pictures and he definitely doesn’t talk much most of the time. He is a customer of mine from the first days of when I first started and has been following my career every since. He will always check and let me know when he is coming. He definitely does not like crowds and I will make it a point to schedule him properly. It took me a while to get him comfortable during his shopping trips and I know most times he did not come for the product but rather the companionship. I realised, customer satisfaction is worthless. Customer loyalty is priceless. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what you sell.
It is about being genuine to someone even if it means you are not going to make a sale on that item. He taught me many things through our short interactions over the years and I can’t help but feel lucky.

To give what you have been given. .

I’am so used being behind the scenes. I didn’t really want to be front and center. I love dressing up people and creating stories through pictures. Fashion shoots are fun but dressing up folks to make them look good and feel great is another level of satisfaction. Knowing that what I am doing is going to give them the confidence to help build their own careers or as simple as a first date, is something I’ll do in a heartbeat. I don’t mind not being in the picture or if all the audience see is just my back or hands adjusting a collar for the 10th time.
Give what you can give that others don’t possess. No one has ever become poor by giving.

So what do memories do?
.
.
The things you remember warm you up from the inside, but sometimes they also tear you apart. Nothing lasts forever, except memories. Memories are a part of us. They are what we’ve been through. Memories make us, us. The love, hugs, kisses and handshakes, enrich us. Memories make us realise things like,
When people you know become people you knew. And you remember the good times you had with them.
When you lost someone close to you forever. You remember them and realise you won’t see or hear them again.
When you think about the things left unsaid.
When you spoke rudely to a friend and it was the last time you spoke to them.
When you were abused or harassed and it left a permanent scar.
There are moments when I wish I could roll back the clock and take some sadness away, but I have the feeling that if I did, the joy would be gone as well.
So what do memories do?
They puzzle you. They fight you. They tie you to chains that never existed.
They bring a tear to your eye, happy and sad.
Passion.shame.euphoria.success.fear.
Every feeling you can think of has memories associated with it. It has people associated with it. Humans, not places, make memories.
I have lost 2 amazing friends in this video and it shouldn’t take another for me to say thank you for the memories.
.
Feel blessed for all the wonderful memories. Don’t forget, we are nothing but a speck on this planet, which is spinning around in the middle of nowhere, going nowhere. .

Realising you can never be too good.

Pursue your passion and everything else will fall into place, not forgetting that progress is progress no matter how small. Sometimes progress is your efforts and not your results. .
No matter how good you think you are as a leader, my goodness, the people around you will have all kinds of ideas on how you can get better. So for me, the most fundamental thing about leadership is to have the humility to continue to get feedback, no matter how small, and try to get better - because your job is to try to help everybody else get better.

How failure turned out to be so much better.

I was given the opportunity to be a graphic designer for a night club as my first proper job, happy to be doing something that I was trained for in school. I think fate landed me this job to show me that this was not what the universe had in mind even though I believed so many people that graphic design was my thang. I ended up putting more effort in the costume department and how this headpiece and matching bib that I made out of 3 LV bags for my boss became my favourite piece instead of the graphic work I was doing.
My first job ended up being a short stint and at that time it was a big disappointment for me. But I would not have it any other way. I left there with some great advice, knowing that graphic was not for me and it somewhat brought me out of my shell. Sometimes it’s ok to be different. For that I say thank you.

Failure is simply an opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently.
Listen to your instincts. Trust yourself. You'll know when you're being honest with yourself and when you're just trying to convince yourself.

The lint roller that ignited a flame.

It was an unpaid gig in Feb 2009 and I was desperate for some creativity. Even though I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do since I was never in fashion, my gut told me I had to be there - Sometimes I remind myself that I almost skipped the party, that I could’ve gone to a different college, that the whim of a minute could have changed everything and everyone.
Back then; I thought it was just a way to hang out with friends. But only now do I realise that lint roller was a trigger.
They say the most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire. It’s almost impossible to extinguish when combined with passion.

What would life be without relationships?

Healthy relationships--those that are mutually caring and giving--are necessary for personal success. Everyone needs someone to learn from and share ideas with. Good relationships offer understanding when you fail, confidence when you're in doubt, and celebration as you go through life. They also allow you opportunities to give, to mentor, and to share.

Take time to nurture and appreciate the relationships that make a difference in your business and your life.
