The immense power and speed of Nile Hippopotamus are legendary. These incredible aquatic mammals have graced the pages of fiction and non-fiction for centuries, mainly due to their extremely territorial behaviour that can result in serious injury or death to humans. .

The shear weight of hippo jaws coupled with their enormous ivory teeth inflict terrible wounds. However, as a species they have a unique ability to heal that beggars belief when you see the fetid pools they often inhabit. .

As the heat of the African day rolls on and the water in the pools warms, so does the intolerance for close company and fights between pod members break out with regularity. Often it’s enough for a dominant animal to show a display of strength by opening its gaping jaws, but not always! .

An overcast day can be a wonderful opportunity to highlight detail in very contrasted wildlife such as herons, but it can also assist in bringing out the details in reflective species like reptiles. The sheen on the scales can be hard to capture in bright sunlight, and the wonderful mosaic of scales easily disappears. .

I found this little Stimsons Python whilst hiking in the desert in central Australia. It was a grey day but the heat was high and the promise of rain was in the air. Flat conditions for landscape imagery, but ideal for highlighting the delicate nuance of the snakes head. .

The mighty Erebus Glacier Tongue flows into the frozen Ross Sea in Antarctica. These impregnable ice walls tower over the landscape and created the Great Barrier to early explorers like Shackleton. .

I have no evidence to suggest so, but I imagine this natural feature was the inspiration for ‘The Wall’ in Game of Thrones. It is a bitter, tortured landscape so vast and so grand, that anyone who claims to have captured it’s essence is a fool. .

Bad hair days can be a distressing but I like the attitude of this Toque Macaque in Sri Lanka. She’s owning her creation, and doesn’t care what the world thinks. If the truth be known hers was the best bouffant in the entire troop! .

Toque Macaques live in highly structured troops based on social status. There are hierarchies in males and females and the pink flesh on the females face deepens in colour as she matures. The species is listed as endangered due to habitat loss, hunting and poaching for the pet trade. .

In a rainforest a large tree functions like a city state. From the deepest root to the highest leaf, it creates an ecosystem for myriad species and even its own microclimate. .

Then you expand your vision to the vines that connect it to the canopy and the bryophytes that carpet it’s buttress roots into the shallow earth. The intricacy of interconnected life is almost unfathomable as is the loss when a forest giant is artificially removed. .

Old growth forest is disappearing in many countries including Australia. As we head towards a Federal election it’s worth thinking beyond the cost of milk, beer and fuel. As recent international political turmoil has illustrated there can be more to lose. .

A large downy chick in a Gentoo Penguin colony offers me a passing glance. I’m not a source of food nor a threat that the large well-fed youngster recognises, just a novelty moving through its icy world. .

And for me that is all I ever want to be when I photograph wildlife. Ideally, invisible but when you’re this close the best one can hope for is non-invasive. Ensure that the animal is doing what it was doing, before you came along and remains undisturbed. .

Ocelot. The staggeringly beautiful markings on these elusive cats made them a prime target for the fur industry for decades. Even today, I come across their pelts in villages where the cats may have preyed on domestic fowl. .

More disturbing are the Ocelot products I observe in Latin American markets, that are sold to tourists as rainforest souvenirs. You are not saving a species nor an individual of that species, if you purchase anything in these environments. You are not rescuing a cub, a bird, a primate, an amphibian or a reptile; you are just creating demand and a supply chain. .

Healthy coral gardens are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Ocean acidification, warming water temperatures and even the poaching of corals for pet aquariums are taking their toll on ancient reef communities. A Dive Master friend on @lizardisland recently explained to me how there’s a design trend where people have enormous coral plates in their houses and not even in an aquarium! .

Reefs can and do recover, we just need to give them a little breathing space. Think about your daily choices that may impact the environment and change something, anything, no matter how small. Have a great week! .

Impala fawns gathered in a crèche. There is safety in numbers when you’re new to the world and many things want to eat you. Impala like other ungulates, gather their offspring into small groups that function as crèches in the way that we understand the concept. .

More individuals means more eyes and ears alert for danger. It also means if a predator does appear then the chances of any single fawn surviving are increased. Sometimes people don’t give Impala enough attention, but I think they are one of the most beautiful antelope. .

The day closes around a Kingfisher roosting on a branch above a wetland. These energetic and inquisitive little birds are synonymous with waterways in warmer climates and especially in the equatorial belt around the planet. .

Their calls can be striking and are often used to locate the diminutive hunters where they search for prey using the shadows of trees overhanging ponds and streams, to reduce the reflection on the water surface. .
