For fellow bookworms, I read 28 books last year that were published in 2018. I’m going to share my top 10, and it’s worth noting that among these are books written by women, people of color, and members of the LGBT community—three groups of people whose voices still seem underheard and underrepresented in literature but who have so much to say.

1. Tales from the Inner City by Shaun Tan
2. Heart Spring Mountain by Robin McArthur
3. Melmoth by Sarah Perry
4. Foe by Iain Reid
5. The Overstory by Richard Powers
6. Ohio by Stephen Markley
7. Calypso by David Sedaris
8. The Vain Conversation by Anthony Grooms
9. Alice Isn’t Dead by Joseph Fink
10. Florida by Lauren Groff .

Heartbroken over the death of Mary Oliver, a giant in my life. May her words help lead us all to a greater appreciation of the natural world and a stronger realization of the urgent need to keep it sacred and safe.

Arlo and I went for a little New Year’s Day hike this afternoon. The birds were mostly silent, the ground was crunchy brown leaf litter with only a few scattered green fronds of fern, and the tawny beech tree leaves hung on the twigs and branches like leftover Christmas ornaments. But in a month or two, this same forest floor will become carpeted in the pink and white fallen stars of mayapple, rue anemone, toothwort, chickweed, spring beauty, and bloodroot. Shortly thereafter, the arms of the beeches will finally let go of their old leaves as the new ones unfold, blinking like lightbulbs of green neon in the warmer air. By then the Winter Wrens and the Red-breasted Nuthatches will have left these Alabama woods for points north, and brighter birds from other lands, the Scarlet Tanagers and the Hooded Warblers, will be arriving to take their place and raise their young before heading back south. And then, as it always does, this will all happen again. It happens over and over, these “new years,” taking place like clockwork and without a hitch, the plants and animals knowing their unchanging roles on the stage of this world they move through. We people, the most evolved and therefore the most foolish of all the animals, are the only living things who wake up on an arbitrary midwinter date and say to ourselves, “This year. This is the one. Another chance. I’m not gonna screw it up this time.”

First ever pelagic birding trip, ft. @honeynjam ! It was pretty much a miserable, grueling 14-hour experience tbh except for the five life birds I got: Magnificent Frigatebird, Bridled Tern, Cory's Shearwater, Audubon's Shearwater, and Great Shearwater!

And a separate but equal happy birthday to my best friend of 16 (!!!) years who turns the big four oh today! You're over the hill now! I've still got so many years to catch up! At least we're aging well. Swipe through for a chilling look into the past, if you dare.
