Today we celebrate #earthday but instead of simply professing our love for the planet like far too many people do on Instagram, we’ve been taking it up several notches by working the last few months on a documentary that will educate and inspire millions of people to wake up and take action to actually protect our ocean! Filmed in half a dozen countries and spearheaded by @amirzakeri and @justinkalaniburbage along with so many ocean/nature lovers like @mylifeaseva @jayalvarrez @elisha__h @reneeherbert_ @therealtarzann @kelv @reefhunter @chelseakauai @samkolder @everchanginghorizon @jess.wandering @badboi @timothysykes @lorenzo_underwater @micahniinuma and @toutiess we are doing everything we can to actually #saveouroceans as these ecosystems are in serious trouble despite their importance considering the vast majority of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean/marine life and yet far too few people know about this critical problem. But we cannot do this alone as unlike other documentaries the success of our project depends greatly on you: this is a group activity where we need you to share our posts and videos with your followers and tag people who need to learn about this before it’s too late in a few years and the crazy part is that no matter how much we’ve damaged these precious ecosystems in the past — and we have done A LOT of damage — nature is resilient and has the potential to regenerate all within a few short years under the right conditions (as you’ll learn about in our documentary!) So, on #earthday2019 please share this video/leave a comment below if you’re willing to make a commitment to help us spread the word about this important cause and we promise you we will not rest until the premiere of the SaveTheReef documentary in June 2019! #happyearthday #karmagawa #savethereef

@badboi @savethereef let’s gooooo

@reneeherbert_ 🙌🙌🙌

Approximately 100 million sharks are killed by humans each year, mainly for the Asian delicacy shark fin soup, but that’s a conservative estimate and a recent study published in the journal ‘Marine Policy’ notes the true number could be as high as 273 million sharks killed by humans every year. It’s not an exact science, but whichever number you go with that means there are between 11,000 and 31,000 sharks being killed by humans PER HOUR EVERY HOUR! But why should you care about sharks? After all, they’re portrayed as merciless killers by Hollywood...but with just 100 or so reported shark attacks each year it’s we humans who are the far greater killers. In fact, over the last 60 years only 439 people TOTAL have been killed by sharks which is roughly the number of sharks humans kill EVERY MINUTE! Hollywood does not show the facts so we are just getting started filming the reality of the situation with shark experts @andremusgrove and @reefhunter over the next few months to set the record straight and you can help us spread awareness of this important problem by sharing this video with your followers and tagging people in the comments who need to see this! It’s okay not to be a fan of these creatures, but understand that they are critical to marine life since they’re apex predators that affects the abundance of species further down the food web...so less sharks — and potentially little to no sharks left at all — is creating havoc in marine life ecosystems EVERYWHERE! Thank you @captainpotter for yet another amazing video! #saveouroceans #savethesharks #savethereef

@timothysykes Uhhhh insanity that we are decimating this species all for a fucken bowl of soup! Spreading awareness is key

@reefhunter Super stoked to make this happen!!!

We love this video by @captainpotter because too often we see people putting down humanity, mistakenly believing that it’s too late to change when in fact IT’S NOT TOO LATE AND WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD BY WORKING TOGETHER! As Sam says, sometimes the problems of our world can feel overwhelming, but we got here one piece at a time and we can recover one piece at a time. I believe in our ability to make drastic change...throughout the world I see a shift in the way we think. I see people starting to make conscious decisions with our planet in mind. We humans may be the problem, but it’s we humans that give me hope and a solution. Even the smallest shift in the way we think, the tiniest action towards making a difference, it can be a powerful thing. Growing up in Hawaii, the reality of plastic pollution washed up on our shores daily and tackling such a monstrous issue felt hopeless at times, but when I just focus on myself, on my personal plastic consumption and how I contribute to the problem, making a difference doesn’t feel like such a daunting task. #endplasticpollution #saveouroceans #savethereef

Of the 260 million tons of plastic the world produces each year, between 5-10% of it ends up in the Ocean so this mess is what more and more parts of the world are beginning to look like. Soon it’ll be like this EVERYWHERE and we cannot let that happen; we MUST take action now before it’s too late — many more people must be made aware of this URGENT issue so please share this video with your followers and tag people in the comments who need to see it! This is a truly eye-opening video from @gold_chaynes who just wanted to swim with manta rays last week and found this mess instead #endplasticpollution #karmagawa #saveouroceans #savethereef

Such a beautiful video of @chelseakauai joining the fish for a swim in this amazing video by @emmett_sparling so please watch/share with your followers and tag people who would like this in the comments so everyone can see how beautiful the world can be when we work together to take better care of it...remember, one of coolest aspects in our fight to #savetheocean is that there’s still time for us to change our ways and do a better job protecting our environment and #mothernature we just need to be aware of the urgent problem to #endplasticpollution otherwise sights like this won’t be possible in just a few years from now! #protectouroceans #karmagawa #savethereef

Repost from @karmagawa Over 1 million marine animals — dolphins, fish, sharks, turtles and birds — are killed each year due to plastic debris in the ocean as there‘s an estimated 100 million tons of plastic in oceans around the world...and its only getting worse with an estimated 60 billion pounds of plastic to be produced this year alone! We at Karmagawa are determined to stop this madness before it’s too late, especially considering there’s even more #plasticpollution on land too, so after we premiere our @savethereef documentary this June for #worldreefday and #worldoceanday we will begin work on a massive new project to #endplasticpollution before it completely destroys our planet. But we cannot win this battle alone, we must ALL work together to change our ways before it’s too late so please share this post with your followers, tag people in the comments so they can be made aware of the damage being done and think about dolphins and all the other incredible animals of our planet before you use another plastic bag...as you can see it can be deadly! Great video by Julian Jordan from his short film “The Last Straw” (thanks to our amazing community for continuing to send us these important videos to share with everyone!) #saveouroceans #dolphins #savethereef

We love this photo by photographer @martin.strmiska but we love his thinking even more: My followers, ocean lovers, underwater photography fans. Thank you for your support — Let me say a few words. The main reason why I have been involved in underwater photography/journalism has not been just my passion for diving and observing marine life. It has been also the motivation to capture and present those wonderful moments to a wider audience. But my mission has changed over the time. I often hear how conservationists describe that we need sharks to keep our oceans healthy, that we need trees to clean our air, that we need bees to fertilize our plants. This is certainly true. But in fact, that is just another “WE = humans NEED”. I wish we all can change our way of thinking, so we would say that we want the sharks to live in the oceans in peace because we just love them. We love the animals because they are our neighbors. We love our planet unconditionally. With my photographs I no longer want people just to get acquainted with the underwater life and its inhabitants, but I also want to motivate them to protect it. I want to manifest my relationship with seas and oceans and let the love I have in my heart be felt in every shot...please like and share this post if you agree!! #saveouroceans #karmagawa #savethereef

Repost from @karmagawa BREAKING: Canada’s annual cruel commercial seal slaughter has opened and will turn Canada’s East Coast bloody with the carcasses of baby seal pups with 97% of the pups being less than three months old! The Canadian government actually regulates these barbaric hunts where seals are killed with wooden clubs, hakapiks (large ice-pick-like clubs) and guns — and the killing process is demonstrably cruel because the main sealskin processing plant in Canada deducts $2 from the price they pay for the skins for each bullethole they find, therefore sealers are loath to shoot seals more than once. This seal hunt on the East Coast is not to be confused with the Inuit hunt in the North that provides food, clothing and other necessities of life, while this hunt is cruel, unnecessary and wasteful as according to Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans, 92% of the meat from this annual hunt goes wasted. Please share this post with your followers, tag people who need to see it and follow @hsiglobal @peta and @action4ifaw to learn what you can do to help end this barbarism! #savetheseals #seallove #karmagawa #savethereef

Coral reefs are one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth, rivaled only by tropical rain forests. They are made up not only of hard and soft corals, but also sponges, crustaceans, mollusks, fish, sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and much more! So it’s extremely sad to think that at the current rate of 8 million metric tons of plastic being thrown into the ocean each year, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish...unless we act and do better! So @nestle likes to claim they’re working towards a healthier future, but last year they produced 1.7 million tons of plastic packaging, a 13% increase from the previous year so @greenpeace made this badass video to call Nestle out on them being hypocrites and we absolutely love it! Please share this video with your followers, tag people who need to see it and most of all tell @nestle to cut the BS and stop it with all their single-use plastics that are ruining our oceans and environment! #saveouroceans #karmagawa #savethereef

WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES Roughly half of the world’s reefs have recently died and 90% are expected to die by 2050, and on top of that we are killing marine life at a faster pace than at any other time in the history of the world...something must change or else our oceans and all marine life will go extinct in our lifetimes or our children’s lifetimes. And that’s when the real consequences will set in as reefs are essential for marine life and marine life is responsible for the majority of the oxygen we need to breathe in order to survive...that’s right, if the oceans die, then we as a species die so that’s why we at @karmagawa created the @savethereef movement and need your help in reaching more people because there’s literally no time to waste in spreading massive awareness about this problem as too few people know about it and mistakenly believe reefs and marine life aren’t very important! They couldn’t be more wrong, but they need to be educated about the issue and that’s what we are here to do...along with making donations to great charities like @coralgardeners @gbrlegacy and @reef_restoration_foundation as we’ve already donated $90,000 to those three groups, but it’s just the start as the good news is that right now there’s still time to act before it’s too late because reefs and marine life can regenerate with just a little help from us humans. Stay tuned for our full documentary feature directed by @amirzakeri coming this summer, but for now please share this video with your followers, tag people in the comments who need to see it and please encourage everyone you know to also follow @savethereef as we can make this planet better BY WORKING TOGETHER! Also, see the many great people tagged in this post as we couldn’t have done this video without them, just like we’re going to need your help to truly fix this urgent problem before it will be too late in just a few years! #saveouroceans #karmagawa #savethereef
