ADOPTION PUPDATE! Bubba was rescued in 2015 from a large dogfighting operation in Ontario, Canada. If you are familiar with the story (which I detail in my book), Bubba was part of the #Savethe21 campaign. After they were seized, Bubba and his buddies were deemed a “menace to society” and were about to be euthanized. @dogtalesrescue jumped in, and after a lengthy and costly legal battle, they gained ownership of the dogs. Bubba took part in a one-year intensive retraining program in Florida with @dogsplayingforlife. He did great there, and was moved to a rescue in Phoenix, @aawlspca. After getting knee surgery and being on cage rest for a while, he was finally available for adoption, and was adopted by Hailie. The two have been settling in their new life. Bubba has some separation anxiety, which has been challenging but his new mom is 100% dedicated to him. Given Bubba’s past, many people would have not thought he could adjust to normal life. Hailie wrote: “I have very little experience with pits, and adopting an ex fighter was something I was apprehensive about, but I have no doubt in my mind that he was the right decision for me. He is the sweetest, most loving, snuggly dog I have ever owned and he has definitely positively influenced my life. I am active duty military and I struggle with anxiety and depression and it was really hard for a long time. I would either just stay out for days at a time or I wouldn't leave the bed and I got sucked into my own dark place. Bubs has given me a reason besides work to get out of bed, and we have such an amazing bond. I had surgery back in December and this sweet boy did not leave my side for 4 days. I had friends come help me feed him and take him out to potty and he would go but he was never away from me for me than 5 minutes. He's such a snuggle bug and definitely my shadow. There is hope for these dogs, I am so in love I cant imagine not having him.” .

Some of the dogs who were rescued with Bubba, since became police dogs, and competition dogs, or found loving families too. A few of them are still looking for home, check them out at www.sharethe21.com/meet-the-21! #ShareThe21

Today is International Women Day. It’s a bit sad that we need one of those days, reminding us that the fight for equality is still far from over. I watched the short documentary Period. End of Sentence on Netflix last night, and I was crying witnessing these beautiful women fight for something as simple as comfort, safety and dignity around their menstruation. These women are so ashamed by their menstruations. They are told they are dirty, that it’s “bad blood”, that they can’t even pray while they are bleeding. They drop out of school because changing is shameful and logistically near impossible. They literally risk their lives by having to go outside and find an isolated corner to change their blood-soaked rags, while men hover around, preying on their vulnerability. .

As these women fought to regain some power over their destiny (by getting a pad-making machine and starting a business), I realized: when women have higher standards for themselves, the entire world is uplifted. By raising the bar of what they expect and want for themselves and their partners, they also empower men to raise the bar for themselves. .
.
Today I have a special place in my heart for all the women in rural communities around the world. May they find strength in being who they want to be, safety as they shatter society norms so they can spread their wings, support in their endeavors, and faith that every single one of them matters to the world. .
.
. (This photo is part of my #Prophecyseries. When I think about who I want to be when I am old and grey, I think about this face. So much wisdom and peace…)

ADOPTION PUPDATE! I photographed Kato years ago, while he was waiting at @AnimalHaven. Not only was he a part of #PitBullFlowerPower, but Kato was so good that we selected him to be a part of a fun shoot we had at a local fancy hotel. Kato was soon adopted, renamed Berlin, and enjoyed life with his family… until they moved to London… As you might know, pit bulls are heavily regulated in the UK (check @borninnocentDDA as they battle to have the law reformed). That meant that Kato/Berlin’s parents couldn’t take him with them and he went back under the care of Animal Haven. Fortunately friends of his previous owner, Lisa and her family, started fostering him immediately, and soon they made it official. Lisa wrote: “I had no idea that he was a part of your Pit Bull Flower Power book, or that he had had a fancy photoshoot at a hotel with you! To me he was “just a dog that needed a home.” He is a great dog, and has a forever home with us. He loves attention and snuggling with people, especially my husband Glen. They bonded immediately. Kato prefers a blanket and pillow, which is why most of the photos include these items. He’s changed the minds of a few people who once thought pit bulls were dangerous. He loves going for car rides and walks. He’s a great addition to our family.”
.
Kato’s story isn’t isolated sadly. Many pit bull-type dogs end up in shelters because of BSL (Breed Specific Legislation), which prevents their loving families from taking them with them when they move to a new apartment, a new town, a new country where bans are in place. We all need to do our share to combat this form of discrimination, by spreading positive stories, by being good, responsible dog owners, by contacting our local politicians and the boards of residential buildings, by choosing insurance companies and retail companies that do not discriminate against pit bulls. For the records, Esurance and PetSmart for example, among others, have discriminatory practices against pit bull-type dogs (Esurance won’t insure households that declare having a pit bull, and PetSmart won’t accept the dogs in their day camp / playgroups). #PitBullFlowerPowerADOPTED #EndBSL

We live interesting times… to say the least. A couple of weeks ago, as you know, Disney/Pixar released Kitbull, a beautiful short about an abused pit bull and a stray kitten forming a beautiful friendship. In that short, the pit bull is being chained, fought by his owner. The moment the man attaches the chain around the neck of the dog is one of the most powerful scenes of the movie, in my opinion. Placing a chain around someone’s neck is such a soul-chattering symbol.
On the other side of the spectrum, remember how we recently called out @forever21 for selling a hoodie featuring a chained pit bull as some kind of cool fashion statement? My #forever21freethepitbull campaign went viral and our negative reaction was heard by corporate, which issued a statement apologizing for offending anyone, stating they would pull the hoodie and donate the money to an animal organization? That was 2 months ago. Well, ladies and gentlemen… they LIED. I am getting reports from all over from people who saw the hoodie in stores, as recently as this weekend… You know you are dealing with some POS brand when they lie so blatantly to their customers and the community. Forever21, get with the program. Watch the Disney/Pixar short Kitbull and tell us again how cool it is to weight anyone’s neck (but your own) with a chain and padlock?

NEW YORK: Miami Max is still waiting for a home!! He was dragged behind a car, and survived pretty serious injuries to his legs and side (I’ve seen pics I can never unsee). It's taken a lot of medical treatment to get him on the mend, but he’s healed really well! He was rescued in Miami and transferred later to @AnimalHaven for a chance at adoption (Miami has a ban on pitties). Despite such horrific cruelty inflicted on this young pup (3 years old), Miami Max could not be sweeter. He will do best in an adults-only home as the only dog. His favorite pastime is giving out kisses and wagging his whole body to tell you he loves you.

@157ofgemma Staaaaawp!!!! This is too much!!!!

Welcome to March! And see how big Roam, this month’s model in my #pitbullflowerpower puppy calendar, has gotten! I photographed her at @luvabledogrescue when she was just 2 weeks old. Her and her siblings became my youngest flower models!! Truthfully, it was like photographing little potatoes with eyes. .

Here is the update from adopter Caitlin: “Roam, now Rome or Romey, is the sweetest girl! She loves to snuggle with us, or her brother Obi. She’s a sweet spoiled girl who takes up most of our king size bed every night. She loves to run and get her zoomies out and wrestle with her brother but mostly she would be perfectly content laying on top of us watching Netflix all day. She’s the sweetest girl and she’s grown up to be such a beautiful dog!”

NEW YORK: Danji is a happy pup but he and his mom Wuyu are still waiting at @animalhaven!
These two came to the shelter recently, when their family had a life change and couldn’t care for them anymore. Thanks to the wonderful community outreach program at Animal Haven, they were rescued and are now looking for a new family. Wuyu is the mother of Danji and they have been together since Danji was born. These two really love and depend on each other, so our goal is to get them adopted into a home together. Wuyu lives with a condition called Addison’s disease, for which she takes medication (which she’ll need for life). Both pups are as sweet as pie and will make the perfect couple in a relaxed home. Fun fact: they speak Korean! They were understandably a bit nervous arriving at the shelter, but have since opened up and they are hilarious! They love playing with each other, and there is nothing cuter than these two. For more info and to apply to adopt Danji and Wuyu in New York, visit www.AnimalHavenShelter.org. .
