Met up with a good friend of mine @nicksuhadolnik to shoot a few photos as we celebrated him getting ready to run the #bostonmarathon ! Today he completed the run in 2 hours and 42 minutes!!
We’re all super proud of him and I’m so appreciative of this collection of photos that we made just for fun. Nick was a great sport and was warm to the camera and trusted me to document him training just after a surf last Monday, a week before the race. I’m constantly trying to challenge myself with photography outside of the water and I feel like portraits have always been my passion but I’ve had to work the hardest to have my quiet persona feel comfortable enough to make them; however swimming in the water has a whole other set of challenges to work out. Sometimes more.
I approached this shoot like an editorial shoot thinking about tight action, pulled back/environmental and a strong portrait for a cover. It’s a good lesson to self assign and constantly strive at your weaknesses to get better.
I know Nick did, he averaged 6:12 a mile today! Proud of you man. See you in the water soon!!

In the newest issue of Surfer Magazine Greg Long is featured in a two page spread from one of the biggest swells to hit the West Coast this winter.  It happened in February, I was at home and had seen the storm when Greg called and asked if I wanted to join him across the border for a few days to surf and go camping.  We’ve shared quite a few experiences like this before, but it had been awhile since we’ve chased a swell together and I was getting the itch to go somewhere.  Greg’s one of those friends that is always there for you, maybe not physically since his travel schedule has him all over the place; however he’s always a text or call away.  As good friends are.  He’d flown in from Maui the night before from chasing a swell to Jaws that didn’t quite materialize.  Actually, come to think of it we went through the long border crossing on the way back since I don’t have a century pass.  I’m rambling now, anyways…We woke up super early in the morning, drove a few hours south and met up with our friends Jojo and the grom of the trip Are.  At day break the tide was high, but we could tell there was swell, as soon as the tide dropped, waves started peeling into the bay.  When getting ready to shoot a session like this I always ask what boards they are going to ride.  Bigger boards typically mean they want the sets so I have to adjust my lens choice and position in the water accordingly.  Greg went with the step up and since the swell had peaked overnight knew there were only going to be a few waves that hit the outside boils.  I chose the 24-70mm lens because as much as I knew the surf action would look good with a long lens, it was important to document the jump off the rocks or walk down just in case there was a set coming.  The anticipation shot can be just as important as the peak action.  7 hours of swimming later, I shot a total of 10 waves or so since, like Greg I only wanted to shoot the best waves.  This morning I woke up to check the mail to see our image in print!  There were several other surfers, filmers and photographers shooting this day, but we held our images for the magazine.  It’s a good feeling, one that I hope never goes away.  @surfer_magazine

This morning’s pot of gold came with rainbows and pre-sunrise tubes. Instagram is such a great way to put together, edit, and curate your favorite images made over an extended period of time or the way that it was originally intended to be used was for instant gratification. I’ve always been a fan of the long form story. Come up with an idea, spend as much time as you need or are allowed to dive in and bring that idea/vision come to life. The realities are, especially for a surf photographer. We’re not always traveling the world on every single swell. It’s damn near impossible. So what is possible is taking the passion, energy, and excitement of going to new places in far off lands and bringing that home with you. Seeing familiar places in an unfamiliar way. This photo was made just a few hours ago with a 5D mark IV in an @aquatech_imagingsolutions housing with one of my favorite lenses to shoot portraits with. The fixed 135mm f/2. The same lens Larry Moore shot some of his most iconic water images with. What’s your favorite lens to shoot with?

One of the best parts about being a photographer is getting to work with like minded creatives who will push you, challenge you, collaborate with you, and together be able to create an image, tell a story, or push you outside of your comfort zones. @bonfirebeachkids and I first met at the very conception of @outerknown and the @kswaveco before it was called that. Actually, both of them were named differently during this time. Since then we’ve become good friends as well as worked on quite a few different projects together. From the first tours of a patch of dirt in Central California (which later became the Surf Ranch), visiting recycled textile factories in Slovenia, producing the Continuance documentary series, and watching multiple ideas go from a handwritten journal to projects that have filled binders full of film, hard drives full of images, and a mind full of memories. This image of John I came across about a week ago. It’s a mere snapshot from our shoot last summer on the North Shore of Oahu of him swimming underneath me as a group of 15 waterman treaded water patiently in jeans while we got ready for the next shot. To say the images that we’ve made aren’t a Group Effort would be an understatement. Looking forward to many more amigo!

Making photos of fellow photographers is always fun and nerve wracking because I feel like they know what you’re doing, watching, observing your lights/cameras/lenses/set-up, etc... John is an incredible photographer and filmmaker with a hobby for surfing too :). @john_john_florence

@live.fast.die.old The only beard worse than mine in surfing

@jarrodwhite9 along with the rest of the staff and lifeguards not only makes sure the guests have the best and safest surf experience when they visit Tavarua, they are usually treated to large plates of food as soon as the bell rings for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Jarrod here chooses to eat his meals out of a smaller cereal bowl. Whatever he’s doing, it works. He can surf all day and catches a lot of waves like this. As the South Pacific becomes more active, I’m hoping to get back into swimming in waves like this soon! @tavaruaislandresort

First off I’d like to thank everyone who has been so supportive of the work that we’ve been making together over the last several years. It has always been a dream of mine to travel the world riding waves and taking pictures, never really thought it would come true but it has and it’s something I think about quite often as to how lucky we are to have something in our lives that inspires us to get up every morning and be our best selves. Whether it’s the extra early morning wake ups to catch a few waves, swim a few laps, ride a few miles or spend an extra couple of minutes with loved ones. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. It’s important to recognize these things and be grateful for them. I feel so fortunate to call a lot of the guys and girls I get to make photos with friends. We’ve shared some amazing times together and some not so good. But that’s what friends are for. Family too...today we picked the winner of a brand new @firewiresurfboards “Seaside” model to a family who supported our Limited Edition version of the Proximity book. It goes to a woman named Kalen who picked out a 5’6 for her husband and son to share!! Family surf trips are being planned from what we’ve been told :). I’d really like to take a minute to say thank you to everyone whose supported our work together to @rob_machado whose idea it was to donate the board as well as @taylorsteele who we couldn’t have made the project without. We call him the Capt. for a reason as well as the surfers and film crews who made each day so fun!! Congrats to Kalen and the family!! We still have a few limited edition copies left and the regular editions that are available on the link my bio page!! Enjoy your new board!!
