A simple and common flower, the sunflower always brings me such joy and happiness. Bright and in your face, I keep them dotted around my flat in New Zealand come summertime as often as I can get them. I find that surrounding myself with plants and flowers at home inspires me to keep writing and being creative. It’s all about the little touches and simple things that spark joy that are part of my self-care routine Don’t forget there is only one day left to enter the giveaway for your very own @parkerpen Sonnet Special Edition Atlas fountain pen. Little-known fact about me: I’m one of the biggest Lord of the Rings fans out there. I’m one of those people who religiously rereads Tolkien’s great works every year since I was about 14, and for me he is one of the greatest thinkers and writers we’ve ever had. Luckily my best friend from university @marikapaz feels the same way, and when we heard that my favorite NYC museum @themorganlibrary was running a rare exhibit on Tolkien and his world, we had to go. A true once in a lifetime opportunity to have some of his great canon featured in one place, including original manuscripts, maps, illustrations, letters and family photos, the Tolkien exhibit at the Morgan runs until May 12th. If his world has inspired you and given you joy, I suggest heading to NYC stat! #middleearthinmanhattan #morganlibrary #tolkien

Just because the snows have left @cardronanz my go-to ski resort in New Zealand doesn’t mean you can’t hoon around the mountain and have a good time come summertime! I’m way too much of a scaredy cat to take on downhill mountain biking again but I could be persuaded for a girls day up the hill to try out their new mountain carting! I was nervous but it was actually serious fun! And I’m happy to report no faceplants and zero crashes! Yeow 🤙 #cardronanz #cardronalovesyou

“We view cynicism as intellectual superiority and ambition as youthful naïveté. When some of the greatest things we’ve done in this country have been ambitious acts of vision.” True words spoken by the incredible @ocasio2018 at SXSW last week, what a privilege to hear this badass lady speak and a real highlight from my trip to the US ️ it was so inspirational to be surrounded by so many innovators, creatives and thinkers on this trip, and it was a real good luck in the ass I needed to try and be a changemaker (I hate that word) and to continue to push the boundaries of what I want to achieve! After all the future belongs to us and we should have a say in it now! #timesup #bethechange #letsdothis

As a lifelong solo female traveler (boys, can’t tie me down, ok?) and someone who truly loves and enjoys getting out and exploring on my own, I really like to encourage my fellow females to get out and travel on their own at least once - it’s a life-changing experience and can teach you things you could never have imagined. Even before Liz Gilbert had her Eat, Pray, Love experience beginning with Ketut in Bali, this little Indonesian island has remained steadfast in the minds of many as one of those places that can change your life. For me, it’s a great place to travel alone as a woman. With plenty of authentic moments waiting for you, new cultures that will open your eyes, and daily coconuts and nasi goreng available just about anywhere, it’s also one of those places I’ve always felt safe traveling alone. After all, travel is meant to be enjoyed, not something to make you worry @southerncrosstravelinsurancnz #SCTI #sp #freeyouradventure

Reflecting back, I seemingly grew up surrounded by terrorism and gun violence in America. From 911 to Virginia Tech to Columbine to the Boston marathon and then Sandy Hook, I kept waiting for the rhetoric to change and for people to wake up and realize we deserve to live in a world where WE ALL feel safe, and that human lives matter more than a right to own a semi-automatic rifle.

So I was drawn overseas, where violence is rarer and the standard of living is higher, pretty fucking ironic considering my fellow Americans belief that the world is super dangerous. I’m not surprised I ended up settling in New Zealand, a place (while far from perfect) does have very little violence compared to what I was used to. Yesterday’s attack in Christchurch was nothing sort of catastrophic. I mean, if someone dies in car accident here it’s all over the news; something of this scale is unprecedented.

My heart broke for those Muslim communities who thought they were safe in one of the world’s most sheltered countries. I’m so sorry.

We should have done more and been better. We failed. New Zealand failed. We should have done so much more to stop this hateful and vile rhetoric, and we didn’t. We pretended everything was ok while white supremacy festered.

Us white folks sit on our thrones of privilege, with no real understanding of inequality because it’s much easier to ignore than to change. We need to do so much better to protect POC, to create safe spaces and stop tolerating any hatefulness that spark these horrors.

We need to acknowledge our collective responsibility that systematically ignores racism (if not enables it) and allows this xenophobia to thrive, because thrive it does. I have so much to say and I’m gathering my thoughts but I want to share now while this wound is raw, that I am committed to acknowledging my ignorance and racism and I want to do all I can to make this world better. Everyone deserves to feel equal and safe in the meantime, #kiakahachristchurch, the world is crying with you, you aren’t alone, and I truly believe @jacindaardern when she speaks that things will change here. We need more sympathy, love, unity and kindness. #theyareus

Wow, Bali has changed since my last visit. Five years ago, I was mostly relaxing in little seaside towns and diving as much as I could. This time, I spent a week in Canggu, a more popular hub for expats, digital nomads and entrepreneurs, working away with friends; I really felt the impact of platforms like Instagram in Bali. A place that was once not much more than rice paddies and surf beaches now has become a magnet for tourists looking to take the best photo at the most stylish spot. And to be honest, I loved it. Canggu was my kind of place. A little town where I could relax in the tropical sunshine, prop my feet up and work away, surrounded by other creatives with all the 20 cent coconuts and $9 massages I could ask for. And don’t even get me started on the trendy millennial cafes with menus that rival Sydney. I could have stayed for a month, with my little scooter to get around on, especially feeling safe in the knowledge I was protected under my annual @southerncrosstravelinsurancnz plan #SCTI #sp #freeyouradventure

I believe with all my heart that magnificent travel moments deserve to be captured into words. How can a photo of a place like this even do it justice? I can tell you that exploring the mountains in Zermatt will take your breath away. Mighty peaks jut out above flowing glaciers, as ibex and mountain goats tiptoe along the rocky facades, you will fall in love with this alpine world 100 times over. With my well-loved journal and favorite travel pen, the @parkerpen Sonnet Special Edition Atlas, I have never felt more inspired to write down my emotions and feelings in this moment, and how grand our world is yet so fragile. My words will live on long after these mighty glaciers disappear. What a thought right? .
